Love grilled yakiniku? This Thamrin gem proves that great Japanese barbecue doesn’t have to be expensive. Here’s why we’re obsessed with this excellent new dining spot.
Among all Asian cuisine, Japanese has always been our favourite. Admittedly, this hasn’t always been easy on our wallets, so when we discover delicious and affordable joints serving our favourite fix of ramen, sushi, and other Japanese dishes, we pay close attention. Enter Waki Japanese BBQ Dining, a Hot New yakiniku restaurant in the heart of Central Jakarta, and possibly our favourite new lunch spot (it’s just the next building over from our office).
Fans of Japanese and Korean cuisine can get the best of both worlds at Waki Japanese BBQ. Appetizers are influenced by Korean fare, with highlights including Assorted Kimchi, Korean-style Chapjae, and Chijimi or Korean pancake with sesame sauce. Before the grilled meat party begins, it’s wise to start the meal with the light and healthy Waki Salad, topped with tofu and katsuobushi, and drizzled with creamy sesame dressing.
Then, comes the fun part: the barbecue. If you prefer to grill the meats yourself, do so once the grill is sizzling hot. Otherwise, enlist the help of a server to help cook the meats while you polish off the appetizers. As soon as grilling begins, pause to inhale that heavenly wave of barbecued meat and imagine the buttery beef melting into your mouth. On our table was the premium A4 Japanese beef, Waki’s limited wagyu, the Tokujyo Kalbi (short rib) and Tokujyo Rosu (tri tip). There was also a plate of thickly sliced Tokujyo Tongue, Waki’s premium toungue that is marinated in savoury sauce. A chopstick war quickly ensued as we fought over the pieces as soon as they hit the plate.
If you’re coming with a group of four or more, we highly recommend getting their Waki Special Platter, made up of Jyo Tongue (sliced tongue with a splash of sesame oil and salt), Kalbi (sliced beef shortplate), Jyo Kalbi (sliced beef striploin), and assorted vegetables. The platter is surprisingly affordable at only IDR 459,000 or around IDR 100,000 per person. That’s not the only wallet-friendly option you can get, because Waki offers a Yakiniku Lunch Set that starts from IDR 69,000 and donburi like Truffle Gyudon, Gyutan Don, and Kalbi Don from only IDR 49,000. Now that’s a great deal.
