This friendly local neighbourhood café got a cosy and approachable revamp, so whether you want all-day breakfast, free-flow happy hours, or a grand ole’ caffeine fix, Ruci’s Joint has got you covered.
This Hot New Table may not a newcomer per se, but Ruci’s Joint recently reopened its doors in December after a short hiatus. The Senopati café decided to mix things up to take a less is more approach by moving away from their collaborative café concept, and instead streamlining towards a centralized kitchen. Their brand spanking revamp has “art café by day and neighbourhood bar by night” vibes that deserve a warm welcome back in the neighbourhood.
The biggest change from Ruci’s Joint’s charming facelift – besides the food, that is – is that all the action has moved behind the kitchen. The neighbourhood local has an all-day appeal – the kind where you can pop in on Fridays for a wallet-friendly serving of local amer (anggur merah aka local red ‘wine’), nip in on the afternoon for a quick cuppa or laze about all catch up on your Sunday reading.
The absence of kiosks means that there’s more space for patrons to kick back, hang out and relax. The joint has more booths to sit in, cosy couches and an eclectic backdrop of plants upon plants, quirky rugs, and some seriously cool artwork from past exhibitions held in the gallery upstairs. In fact, the main seating area can even be rearranged for booking private events.
Comfort food is the name of the game here, and there’s something for everyone, so take your time perusing the menu. There’s a large selection, with several help from their friends at Frux, Machete, and 3K Coffee. To start, we tried their Kale Caesar Salad – all the rage these days – made with fresh kale, Caesar dressing, grilled chicken breast, a half boiled egg and crispy croutons. We also sampled their O’Fish Burger – a classic deep fried dory burger with Seattle-style tartar sauce – almost an elevated throwback to a childhood favourite from Mickey D’s. Our personal favourite dish was their Asian Rib Eye Steak, marinated in a ginger sauce with sautéed horenso, roasted tomatoes and served with garlic rice that we polished off promptly.
If you’re nursing a hangover (as one does every so often) as the experts say, go for the grease: their Hangover Cure French Toast is just what the doctor ordered as the savoury French toast is topped with crispy bacon, scrambled eggs and hollandaise mayo. You’ll also want a generous serving of their crispy on the outside and soft on the inside Truffle Fries – freshly hand cut potato fries with soft mashed filling drizzled with truffle oil and parmesan cheese.
But it isn’t only comfort food that Ruci’s Joint does well, one stand-out that we tasted was actually their Ice Cube Latte, an exclusive to Ruci’s Joint drink made in collaboration with 3K Coffee. You are served with a single frozen espresso cube placed into a glass, alongside a tall carafe of warm milk. Just pour the milk to taste and watch the espresso melt beautifully.
Post workweek, make sure you stick around because Ruci’s Joint also offers a decent free-flow deal that runs 6-9pm on Fridays – that means all the amer that you can drink. Now that’s a deal we can get behind.
