What inspired you to start a cold-press juice business?
When I was young, I was overweight and I remember people calling me ‘Fatty”. I tried dieting and was stressed out all the time because I was so concerned about what I was eating all of the time. As I grew up, I found out ways to live healthily, which included not keeping to a strict diet because it only stressed me out every time I look at the scale. And the more you try to strict yourself, once you stop or lessen up, you just go crazy binging on junk food. This motivated me to take a degree in food science and nutrition. When I was studying, I exercised regularly, plus I continued to eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies, which I have always loved. And what’s the best and easiest way to eat lots of them? Juice them!
What are the benefits of cold-press juice detoxes, especially for busy urbanites that live in Jakarta?
One bottle of our cold-press juice can contain up to 1.2-kilograms of fruits and veggies. A day of our detox program includes six bottles, so with our standard three-days detox program you can consume more than 20 kilograms of fruits and veggies. This is quite impossible if you don’t juice them! Cold-press technology involves a hydraulic press, which uses a tremendous amount of pressure to squeeze out as much of the good stuff as possible without a blade or heat.
How did you develop this detox cleanse?
I use RDI (Required Daily Intake guidelines) to compose the detox program and we use almost 40 ingredients (fruits & veggie). Sometimes people think eating one or two type of fruits is enough. However, some fruits contain certain vitamin and others don’t, so the most comprehensive way to let your body get all the nutrients that you need is to consume a variety of them. Eating almost 40 types of fruits and veggie everyday is pretty hard, but drinking them is a lot easier! When you go on detox juice cleanse, your body still gets all the nutrients that it needs while taking a rest from the hard work of digesting meat and all those processed foods.
At Cold Press, we tested more than 100 flavours before coming up with our six signature detox varieties. We want the detoxers to love the experience! I don’t believe in starving yourself or torturing yourself with things that don’t taste good while you cleanse. When you don’t enjoy the experience, you are less likely to cleanse again. It’s like when you don’t love exercising, you will do it less often. Living healthy should be a great experience!
Are detox cleanses hard to do?
I have tried 14 days of juice cleansing with our six signature flavors (Green Boost, Roots Exotic, Nutty Nuts, Refresh, Hawaiian Breeze, Citrus Burst) because I wanted to try out the effect of Cold Press Juice before I started marketing it to the public. I will only market products that I love to consume.
The detox was hard for the first two days, but from the third day onwards, I was addicted to the feeling of being “clean”. My skin glowed and I felt energetic. I had a very busy schedule and often felt lethargic, but while I was doing the cleanse, I wasn’t tired at all and I didn’t feel hungry. Most people think it’s impossible to just drink juice, but the matter of the fact is that you rarely feel hungry. Some of our customers even asked us if they can skip the sixth bottle because they are so full. Mostly people think they are hungry but actually they aren’t. Sometimes it’s best to ask yourself, are you really hungry?
For the best transition into and out of a detox, it’s best to start eating light and raw before starting, and after the detox. Try to eat raw, unprocessed fruits and veggies, clear broths, no fried stuff, salad (careful with the bacon, cheese, and creamy dressing!), steaming is a good option, and grilled fish and chicken.
If people are curious about cold-press juices or detoxes, what’s the easiest way to get started?
If you are unsure about a full-on juice detox, you can start with semi-liquid diet. We developed “Mini Me” (which are 275ml compared to our full-size 550-ml bottles) because we saw that many people are afraid to do total liquid detox. With this smaller set, people can mix the juice with raw fruits and veggies during the day. Example: drink the first bottle of juice, then eat an apple, drink the second bottle and eat a handful of strawberry, drink the third bottle and eat salad with vinaigrette, and so on. This way, you are still giving your body a break from all the processed food.
