Choosing the right Preschool for Your Child
It’s no secret the first years of your child’s life are a critical period of development. Children who are well stimulated are more prepared intellectually and emotionally for school. Preschools provide the perfect environment to give your child a great start – so choosing the right one is key to your child’s success.
Determining a good preschool for your precious little one is not as difficult and stressful as you may think. Here are five things to look at when it comes time to choosing the perfect program for you and your tot.
It’s important to ask about the curriculum. A good curriculum includes a variety of age appropriate activities. Check whether the program includes enough time each day for exploration, free play, and peer interaction.
Focus on the child
Spend some time at the school observing the everyday interactions. Observe the children’s interaction with peers and adults and whether the setting builds healthy and stimulating relationships.
The teaching staff should have an educational background in Early Childhood development. Ask what degrees and training their teachers have and how long teachers and staff have been with the program. Teachers that stay longer in the program are more likely to have experience in promoting children’s learning and establish a close bond with children.
Communication between school and home
Ask about how information and concerns are communicated between the school and home. Check that the program’s policies include parent involvement.
Polices and Practices
Check whether the program is licensed. What are the policies and procedures to help keep children safe from preventable illness and injury? Observe that the facilities are age-appropriate and well maintained, both indoors and outdoors. Also ask about the adult-child ratio, which helps determine how much individual attention your child will get.
