Mother knows best, but so does the Monster. Whether you’re hanging out with your girlfriends during the day or releasing your inner monster at night, there’s always something for you at Mother Monster.
In mere days after the opening of Mother Monster in Plaza Indonesia, lots of pretty photos of pink walls, cactuses and the signage of this restaurant’s catchy name emerged on Instagram. Jakartans were exceptionally fast when it came to discovering the Instagrammable Hot New Table that is Mother Monster, and as this unique dining spot quickly rose to fame, we wondered, who is this mother, really?
Behind the mother is Biko Group, who’s also known for restaurants like Beer Garden, Pippo, Fujin and Pao Pao. It’s also the collaborative brainchild of Common Grounds, so when it comes to coffee, you know you’ll not be left disappointed. When asked about the concept, they mention that Mother Monster is a New American restaurant that is a “mother by day, monster by night”. Both terms are pretty contradictory, and that’s exactly how Mother Monster is – it’s designed to be a cafe serving coffee and a restaurant serving comfort food during the day, but when the night comes, the place switches gears to a happening hot spot where you can grab drinks by the bar while a DJ plays killer tunes. The city’s drinking culture is what the restaurant tries to develop with their concept, and we know exactly what they’re trying to do when we saw their selection of alcoholic drinks.
The drink menu includes the basics like wine, beers, classic cocktails and other liqueurs, but what’s so special about it is their special “Mother’s Liquid Libation”. There’s a total of four special cocktails, but the best two are the Chocolate Mar-three-ni and Pleasure Garden. The first one comes with three small bottles filled with a mixture of vodka and brown cacao liqueur that you pour into three tiny martini glasses with liquid ginger chocolate, orange chocolate, and white chocolate on the rims. Their Pleasure Garden drink, made of gin, black raspberry liqueur, raspberry syrup and fresh lemon juice, is Insta-worthy (and much stronger than it looks!), as it comes with a “hanging garden” inside a teardrop-shaped glass.
To accompany the drinks, their sinful yet delicious Monster Chicken Skin makes for a great bar snack, while their Monster Double Decker, a smashed double beef burger, makes for a great cheat meal. Their delicious coconut-based dessert Class-A Coco is just the thing to top it all off. Some of their dishes may be simple but the taste is definitely not disappointing, especially when it comes to their steaks. And when you take a look into their menu, you’ll find quirky, catchy names – just like the name of Mother Monster itself – like Summon the Salmon, Ugly Olio, Gone with the Carb, and Green with Envy.
Interior-wise, Mother Monster is the place that millennials will totally adore. They have four different areas with different concepts of design. At the front, you’ll find a coffee bar and the coffee-drinking area that’s decked out in grey, while inside, you’ll find a pretty space with pastel pink walls with green cactuses (here’s where take out your cameras, Honeys!) that juxtaposes the more masculine bar beside it. Further inside, you’ll find an unexpectedly spacious outdoor area dominated by plants and dark green colour, where you can enjoy the tunes played by the DJ as the night comes. So whatever time of the day you feel like coming and whatever you feel like having, you know there’s always something for you at Mother Monster.
