In this edition of Hot New Tables: Cafe Lulu, Ruci's Joint, Meatman Nikuo, Agneya, and Lewis and Carroll Dessert Bar.
The holiday season is always closely acquainted with lots of good food and much to our delight, there is never a shortage of fabulous new restaurants in Jakarta for us to visit. This month, we’re featuring authentic Japanese and Indonesian restaurants to a neighbourhood eatery serving comfort food, an art cafe and a dessert bar. And if that’s still not enough, don’t worry because we’ve launched Hot New Tables’ new Instagram account! Follow @hotnewtables to get updated daily on the hottest new tables, best bars and coolest cafes each month.
Cafe Lulu is the hot new hangout spot Kemang Village always needed but never had – until now. The Instagrammable restaurant boasts major jungalow vibes – we’re loving the speckled pink walls and tropical plants, while the red top tables are perfect for the ‘gram. Oh yes – the food. There’s plenty on the menu including pizza, pasta and even a quinoa nasi goreng. Seriously. If you’re looking for baked goods, kitte, their sister bakery, occupies the space up front, serving freshly made croissants and other decadent pastries.

After a short hiatus, Ruci’s Joint reopened its doors with a brand spanking new revamp. Gone are the rotating multi-vendor food stalls, and in its place, a streamlined neighbourhood cafe that serves comfort food for an all-day appeal. Whether you’re hungry for all-day brekky, a hungover brunch, a Friday night free-flow, or afternoon caffeine fix, Ruci’s Joint’s new menu will have you sorted.

Fans of authentic Japanese food will love Meatman Nikuo, a new restaurant that joins the tasty ranks of the Sudirman neighbourhood. Get their Maguro Zukushi, consisting of tuna sashimi, chopped tuna sashimi, tuna sashimi marinated with soy sauce and the juicy fatty tuna Toro, and our favourite Rare Maguro Toro Katsu. Their yakitori is also recommended, with selections like Tori Kawa or chicken skin, Buta Bara or pork belly, Mozzarella Cheese Bacon and Beef Sukiyaki Kushi.

Taking inspiration from the name of the goddess of fire, Agneya takes pride in the use of fire, serving dishes that are grilled over charcoal and jackfruit wood in an open fire. Located at Jalan Wijaya, this new Indonesian restaurant is famous for their tasty Jagung Goreng Keriting, which is sprinkled with salty and hot spices and has a unique curly shape due to the frying. Their Nasi Jagung Kotor and the refreshing Soun Bunglon Udang salad, whose colour transforms from blue to pink when its lime tamarind dressing is poured onto it, is also recommended. When at Agneya, don’t miss their favourite Bebek “Ala Rica-Rica” Bambu Bakar, served inside a bamboo stem that was fire roasted at the open kitchen.

Lewis & Carroll Dessert Bar
You must know Lewis & Carroll as a tea house, but if you’re a dessert lover like us, you’ll notice that they have some of the best desserts too. That may be the reason why this tea house decided to open its third branch at Senayan City with the concept of a dessert bar, serving a wider selection of never-seen-before desserts in addition to their usual menu. 12 new exciting confections are now available, with highlighted dishes like Banana Nest, Rice, Violet, Mochi Brulee and Tiramisu. After all, Lewis & Carroll is still all about the craft tea blends, so they also offer a suggested tea pairing for each of the sweet treats.
