Lebaran or Ied Al-Fitr is a pretty big deal in Indonesia. You get a week off, everyone gets new clothes (hello there, crazy Ramadan sales!), and of course all the festive feasting that comes along with it. And after a whole month of fasting, boy, do we deserve it. One of our favourite things about the season is all the delicious traditional Lebaran cookies that are typically given away as gifts (and if you’re anything like us, you’ll probably keep a few jars for yourself too). Here we rounded up six of our favourite traditional Lebaran cookies – let’s see if you’ve tasted them all.
Nastar, short for “nanas tart,” is a melt-in-your-mouth buttery pineapple tart that is our personal favourite Lebaran cookie. The round cookie is made up of a buttery biscuit, filled with a dollop of pineapple jam made from caramelized grated fresh pineapple, and is available with a topping of sprinkled cheese or plain egg wash. We cannot get enough of this!
Lidah Kucing is a Dutch-inspired sable butter cookie that is named as such due to its cat tongue shape. It is also commonly known in Indonesia as its Dutch name kattetong. Long and flat, these sweet crunchy cookies are pretty light and addictive to nibble on. Nowadays, Lidah Kucing comes in many different flavours and presentations like chocolate and even rainbow. You choose!
As one of the only savoury cookies of the bunch, kaasstengel is a highly popular Lebaran cookie. In Dutch, kaas means cheese while stengels means stick. While the cookie dough already contains a lot of grated cheese in it, we like it the most when this cookie has an even more generous amount of sprinkled cheese on top it. Because there’s no such thing as too much cheese!
Kue Kacang is a butter cookie baked with mashed peanuts, and perfect for those who like a taste of sweet and saltiness in every bite. Children love this cookie as it usually comes with cute forms like a heart, moon or star.
Sagu Keju is another scrumptious sweet/savoury cookie made with a touch of cheese and coconut milk. If you’re familiar with cassava cheese cookies, you’ll agree that they resemble the same texture and taste. Crunchiness at every bite!
Putri Salju or Snow White cookie is another butter cookie that is coated with heap-loads of powdered sugar. It’s not at all easy to bake since not everyone can make it solid, yet soft after one bite. You’ll know this sweet concoction is golden when it perfectly crumbles and dissolves in your mouth, leaving you craving for more!
