Featuring fitness studios, a family-friendly restaurant and outdoor play park for kids, our Honeykids writer Michelle Santoso finds out why this one stop shop activity centre is a life (and time) saver for mums and children in traffic-laden Jakarta.
Living in Jakarta is no easy feat. Ask anyone who has to sit in a car for two and a half hours to go to the office, and calls it a good day when they only have to sit in a car for just one hour. Just an hour is 60 minutes of your life, every, single day – and that’s not even including the time you will have to sit in the car for an additional “fun ride” of traffic before heading off to your next location: maybe school drop offs, perhaps some yoga or even lunch with a friend. These things are almost made impossible when faced with traffic and you can only accomplish one thing a day. Productivity is not for Jakartans as some can’t even leave the house and centre all their activities at home. Mums usually drop off their kids to school and then arrange a day with their friends in the house. In short, we need a more efficient way of tackling the traffic AND be able to do all the things we aim to accomplish within a day.
In a sense, everyone in Jakarta is a master of logistics, having to constantly plan out routes and timetables to navigate the insane macet. For two mums, Irarosa Boediono, a mum of five (yes, you read that right – not a mum of a 5-year-old) and her partner, Navilla Naif, a mum of a 2-year-old, the frustration of having to constantly brave the traffic, and then scrambling to fit a time-table bloomed into an unexpected business idea encompassing almost everything mums and their children need.
That’s when they started SIKU, a small tastefully decorated estate tucked away in the leafy South Jakarta neighbourhood of Dharmawangsa. There’s plenty to do for all ages as SIKU is made up of a cosy cafe/restaurant downstairs that lure you to spend your afternoons there; an outdoor play area perfect for picnics; and a second floor studio that provides classes for mums and children. For mums this means Yoga, Zumba, Pound Fit or Belly Dancing, and for children, they have a center called “Eye Level” that teaches math, english and even Chinese. SIKU is also complete with a shower and locker area so you won’t have to wait in the car to get home and wash up.
Having everything in one place is a serious time saver and get this, there is a pop-up beauty clinic downstairs if you want to get pampered during your children’s lessons. or tell SIKU ahead time so that after your workout, you can schedule a blow dry. A real testament that both Irarosa and Navilla have put a lot of thought into everything to make sure you won’t have to get in a car just to get something done in a day.
Having spent a short afternoon with the two best friends who have been friends since high school, they believe that activity is key to boredom busters and keeping your day productive. “I’m particularly a person who can not sit still”, describes Irarosa. “I have always liked taking classes and have always enrolled the children in classes to keep their day productive. Otherwise, they sit at home with nothing to do.”

For these two power mums, time management became a question that was solved with a business idea and aren’t they the perfect example of women who really can do it all? Imagine being a mum, taking care of your household and a growing business. That is the true embodiment of a woman empowered. Busy, but empowered.
“We thought that with SIKU opening, we would have more time in a day but, this is keeping us pretty occupied for the mean time,.” Navilla laughed.
“But the children are happy?” I enquired. Both women agree that their children are much more happier and centered having been able to hang out with other children their age, enjoy a drink in the cafe and have mum an arms length away.
Understandably so when SIKU is designed to be a home away from home with a little green pasture, transporting you to a slice of paradise – away from the bustling chaos that is the traffic of Jakarta.
Finally, an answer.
