Super Mums We Love
Your gorgeous baby has grown into a little person, so you have a bit more time on your hands (you competent multi-tasking mum, you), and you can’t ignore the niggling need to find a new challenge (that doesn’t include having another kid!). Well, it’s good to know that life in Jakarta allows us to have good help at home and free us up to become “mumpreneurs”.
That – doing the balancing act between raising little ones and starting a successful business – is exactly what two young Dutch mums, Naomi Bolderhey and Judith Bakker, have got down to a tee.
The trials and errors in finding the right business can be taxing for most aspiring mumpreneurs but this talented duo made the most of their experience as new honey mummies to design and create fab furniture for kids and babies to sit in or on. So, enter their new company, DUDUK (meaning to sit, in Indonesian).
Using local batiks in strong vibrant colours, they have a colourful and incredibly fun range of pillows, poufs, floor-mats, kids’ sleeping bags, and loads more – basically it’s stuff that any mum would love to have in her home. We love the totally cool handmade and hand painted Tipi Tent, which is great for both indoor and outdoor play. Their kid-sized rattan chairs and triangle pillows are also perfect for enticing any little bottoms. Bedroom accessories for the munchkins are not forgotten either, check out DUDUK‘s lamps and hand-crocheted rugs.
Though they started small, Naomi and Judith are not people who rest on their laurels! With great plans for the future, one of their (very admirable) goals is to support local cottage industries. Their products are already using natural materials like rattan, bamboo, kapok and cotton, but they’re working towards products made of organic materials that are 100% made in Indonesia. Another thing we’d love to see becoming reality is the eco-batik (made of 100% organic cotton and natural dye) range of products that they’re planning with batik makers in Bali.
The best part? They’ve now introduced a DUDUK home line with adult sized versions of the rattan chairs and decorative pillows using more sophisticated colours and designs. And you’ll get the chance to scope them out in person at Alun Alun at Grand Indonesia West Mall from now till 21 February.
It’s heartwarming to see their families growing alongside this year-old brand. With Naomi a proud mum to little Zoe and Judith expecting her second bundle of joy next month, these super mums seem to have gotten everything right.
We’ll leave you with these words of wisdom (courtesy of Naomi’s ex-boss): The key to starting a business is to start. You can always perfect it as you go along. So Honeys, if you have the time and the need to be productive outside the home, and possess a burning passion for something, we say give it a go!
