Highlights from Tangerang, West Jakarta
It’s a fact of life that we all can’t live in the heart of Jakarta, many of us commute from further afield. Just because you’re in the outskirts, that doesn’t mean you’re missing out. Check out what Bintaro and Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) in Tangerang have to offer!
The fastest way to get to Tangerang Selatan (TangSel) is through the Jakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR). Continue on to the Jakarta-Serpong toll road and choose your exits according to the areas you want to explore: Pondok Aren exit for Bintaro, BSD City/Pamulang/Ciputat exit for Pasar Modern BSD, and BSD City/Serpong/Tangerang for the rest of BSD, Alam Sutera, and Lippo Village Karawaci.
Bintaro (Sektor 7-9)
To get to Bintaro, take the Pondok Aren exit. Be warned: take the leftmost lane, or you’ll miss it. As you pass through, you’ll notice the huge Bintaro Xchange. This building houses the biggest ice-skating rink in Indonesia, the BX Rink. Here you can skate, play hockey, and even take a drop-in skating class whenever you want. If you’re bringing a junior skater, rent the penguin skating aid – they’ll be gliding in no time!
Next up: shopping or dining? Trick question, shopping first always! To get a good bargain, go to Bintaro Junction and scour through three floors of clothing at Heritage Factory Outlet. More of a scrapbook artist than a shopper? Head to My Scrapbook Ideas on level 2 for supplies and inspiration.
If you have worked up an appetite during your shopping spree, you’re in luck. Bintaro has lots of dining options including Hawaiian, Indian, and Western. Aloha Terrace serves great Hawaiian pupus (starters) and salads – with a Japanese twist. We’re fans of their Hawaiian delicacy loco moco, pineapple rice, and mango pancakes. Did we mention they have a monthly hula dance event?
Chennai Café at Bintaro 9 Walk serves Indian fare, as well as Indian-Indonesian fusion food that’s loaded with spices. For you mates from Down Under, Sektor 9 Bistro & Lounge might make them homesick. The restaurant puts a lot of TLC in their BLTs, burgers, as well as their green-tea latte and coffee. For Sundanese fare with an awesome view, go to Talaga Sampireun. You’ll be dining in small huts on a lake. After dining, you could chillax and dip your feet into the water while the littlies amuse themselves in the playground area.

Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD)
The exit after Pondok Aren is BSD City/Pamulang/Ciputat. After exiting, take a U-turn and you will soon find Pasar Modern BSD on the left. The place lives up to its name: it has succeeded in making a marketplace modern enough for today’s shoppers while keeping its traditional charm. We love the traditional cakes, like Serabi Notosuman. We couldn’t pass them up when we were younger, and we still in love with them today. The Puspita Bakery Shop is also a must-visit for those with a nostalgic sweet tooth, you might find delicacies that have long disappeared from supermarket shelves! But get there early, the market closes around 1pm.
As the sun sets, the area turns into a culinary haven for Indonesian food. Be adventurous and choose between one of the many food tents (The Pasar Lama pork satay and Oong Junaedi goat-leg soup are among our faves), or the restaurants in the building.
The last exit of Jakarta-Serpong toll road is the BSD City/Serpong/Tangerang exit. As you exit, the road will be divided into two, bear right and you will see RM Ujung Pandang on the right. This restaurant brings in all of their fish straight from Makassar, which explains the rare menu items such as ikan kudu-kudu (yellow-box fish) or ikan sukang (leather-jacket fish). We love their four types of sambals and we usually mix them up to get our own blend of spicy/sweet/salty. Not far from the RM Ujung Pandang is the famous Sate Kardjan from Bandung with their perfectly chargrilled goat satays.
If your brood needs more excitement than what a movie theatre can provide, try the Ocean Park water park. It has a wave pool and exciting slides for the thrill-seekers, as well as a splash pool for the toddlers. We adults are happy with the mellow Caribbean River that flows around the park – all you need to do is sit back, relax, and get a nice tan along the way!
Swimming will surely get your rugrats hungry – and sometimes, grouchy. Fret not! D’Cost is right next to the water park, so you can cut off those hunger-induced tantrums before they even begin.
Another option a bit further is, of course, the grand Summarrecon Mal Serpong (SMS). The mall is stretched between two buildings, so you know you’ll have loads of options. We love dining al fresco at their Downtown Walk. Did you know the famous Hong Tang from PIK has opened a branch here? Dig into their sweet Taiwanese desserts and stop by at the newly opened Uniqlo afterwards. Hey, those calories has gotta go somewhere!
