It\u2019s hard to imagine Hong Kong\u2019s streets without these vibrant and colourful signage boards. Yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bd.gov.hk\/en\/building-works\/signboards\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tightening building regulations<\/a> mean the familiar hue that once shrouded our cityscape is being stripped away one sign at a time. While the future of neon signs may be dimming, craftspeople and contemporary artists in Hong Kong are fighting to salvage and preserve the city\u2019s representative glow in alternative ways.<\/p>\n<p>We speak with grandfather-grandson duo, neon craftsman Wong Kin-wah (\u9ec3\u5065\u83ef) and contemporary artist Jerry Loo, about their latest collaborative exhibition, <em>Neon Heroes: Illuminated Dreams<\/em> taking place at PMQ. And that\u2019s what inspired me to do a hero-themed exhibition,\u201d explains Loo as he leads a tour of his latest showcase at PMQ. <em>Neon Heroes: Illuminated Dreams<\/em> is a collaborative project not only between Master Wong and Loo, but also of craftspeople and artists, tradition and contemporaneity.<\/p>\n<p>Sprawled over the Courtyard and Marketplace of <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/hong-kong\/guide-to-sheung-wan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheung Wan<\/a>\u2019s arts and cultural hub is a collection of life-size installations that cleverly incorporate familiar neon lights into new forms. \u201cIf we simply create more neon shop signs, people will just be admiring them from afar without really appreciating what makes neon lights special,\u201d says Loo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222856\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222856\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222856 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-exhibition-the-luminous-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"the luminous jerry loo\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-exhibition-the-luminous-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-exhibition-the-luminous-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-exhibition-the-luminous.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerry Loo posing in front of <em>The Luminous<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Part of <em>Neon Heroes<\/em>\u2019 charm is its interactivity. Visitors can touch and get up close and personal with all but one installation in the exhibition, whether they\u2019re posing for a picture or inspecting the intricacies of neon\u2019s glowing attraction. \u201cThis sculpture is two-dimensional,\u201d Loo gestures towards <em>The Luminous<\/em>, a fire-shaped installation bearing a distinctive yellow hue. \u201cBut by manipulating the light\u2019s glow using glass panels, it appears to be three-dimensional instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A homage to the masters<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222858\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222858 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-homage-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"homage to the masters\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-homage-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-homage-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-homage.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibition shot of <em>Eternal Glow: Legacy in Neon<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis piece is dedicated to my grandfather, Master Wong,\u201d says Loo as he stands hand-in-hand with his grandfather by <em>Eternal Glow: Legacy in Neon<\/em>, the largest installation in the exhibition. \u201cHe\u2019s now the most experienced neon craftsman in Hong Kong, having produced some of the city\u2019s most iconic neon shop signs in the past 60 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince coming to Hong Kong in \u201854, I\u2019ve been making neon shop signs till now. Whether big or small, I\u2019ve made plenty,\u201d Master Wong recalls his journey in the neon industry fondly. \u201cAll along Nathan Road, and also [on the front of] bars in Wan Chai\u2019s Lockhart Road, you\u2019ll see some of my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Adapt, innovate, create<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222854\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222854\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222854 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-close-up-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"neon heroes exhibition shot\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-close-up-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-close-up-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-close-up.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exhibition showcases the process of neon sign making<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis installation shows how neon craftspeople adapted technologies of the trade as they were imported from the west,\u201d explains Loo, gesturing towards the replica of a tool used to heat glass tubes used in neon sign crafting. \u201cThere are many more twists and turns when crafting signs with Chinese characters than the English alphabet. To make a character from a single glass tube is a testament to the craftsman\u2019s skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all hands-on work,\u201d Master Wong explains the process of bending a straight glass tube into shape. \u201c[The characters on] neon signs are made of glass, which is a technique that\u2019s hard to mechanise. Signs are two-dimensional, and we trace a draft with the glass tube through repeated rounds of heating, twisting, and glass blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A feat of engineering and alchemy<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222853\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222853 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-blue-installation-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"neon heroes deep thought ice blue neon shop signs neon signs\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-blue-installation-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-blue-installation-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-blue-installation.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The enchanting hue of <em>Deep Thought, Ice Blue<\/em> comes from a meticulous crafting process<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEvery design starts with a white glass tube. To get different colours, you need to coat the inside of the tube with a powder,\u201d Master Wong gestured towards the blue- and yellow-hued installations around the exhibition. \u201cFor green, you need to add argon gas when you vacuumise the tube. To get a reddish-orange, you add neon gas. There is a lot of variety, and people always say my work is like a scientist\u2019s!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to make some very intricate designs for the exhibition,\u201d says Loo. \u201cBut since I want visitors to interact with [the installations], I have to take safety and other concerns into account and work on each piece with my grandfather and his team of craftsmen.\u201d Master Wong reinforces the intricacies of working with an extra plane: \u201cThree-dimensional designs are different; you need another formula for those.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222860\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222860 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-superhero-landing-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"neon heroes superhero landing\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-superhero-landing-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-superhero-landing-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-superhero-landing.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Neon Heroes<\/em> primarily features interactive exhibits<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor example, <em>Superhero Landing<\/em> is a three-dimensional design,\u201d Loo gestures towards the centrepiece in the Courtyard. \u201cIt&#8217;s essentially a glass tube spiral, and the production process is very different from your usual neon signs. But the craftsmen were very eager and open to trying new techniques and designs despite the lack of familiarity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A dwindling heritage or revived legacy?<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222857\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222857\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-222857 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-group-photo-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"group shot neon shop signs neon signs neon lights\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-group-photo-900x643.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-group-photo-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/neon-sign-master-interview-group-photo.jpg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Master Wong and Jerry Loo posing in front of <em>The Dragon Within<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve made many neon shop signs in my time, but many have been removed,\u201d Master Wong reminisces with a bittersweet smile. \u201cThe decline [of neon shop signs] on public buildings comes from a mandate to register with the Building Department, which increases the cost of commissioning and owning a sign, which can become burdensome for small businesses.\u201d Yet, Master Wong remains hopeful about the future of neon signs in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this will help get the word out about neon shop signs,\u201d comments Master Wong on <em>Neon Heroes<\/em>. \u201cThere are a lot of young people who come to me to learn [about neon sign crafting], but for most of them, it\u2019s only an interest. They have their own careers, so it\u2019s difficult to pick it up full-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeon signs will change with the times,\u201d muses Loo. \u201cSo will people and places. We might not see neon signs on the streets as much, but they will evolve and look towards a more artistic future. I don\u2019t think neon signs must be tied to nostalgia.
