Get inspired by the success stories of three Hong Kong entrepreneurs \u2013 Christine Deschemin, Founder of Renewed Edge Hypnotherapy & Counselling Centre<\/a>;\u00a0Victoria Chuard, Founder of Just Peachy<\/a>; and Melanie Staunton, Founder & CEO of Communicate<\/a> \u2013 as they share their networking etiquette and strategies for making a lasting impression and building fruitful relationships at networking events<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Networking etiquette 101<\/h2>\n

1. Preparation is key<\/h3>\n

Melanie:<\/strong> Make sure to do your research ahead of the event; read about what’s going on in the news and popular culture, so that you have topics to discuss. Think about the impression you want to make, and the energy you want to bring to the event and the people you meet!<\/p>\n

2. Bring a friend<\/h3>\n

Victoria:<\/strong> I am an extroverted introvert \u2013 which means I may across to most as extroverted, but deep down I’m really an introvert. For people like me, others expect us to be awesome at networking, but like many, I dread it every time! What makes it easier for me is to go with a friend who gives me the safety blanket for those inevitable awkward moments when I’m standing by myself. Their company can be an immediate confidence boost.<\/p>\n

3. Practise a few introductions<\/h3>\n

Melanie:<\/strong> Building connections is something I really enjoy! To start things off, my top tip for networking etiquette is to practise a few different introductions (out loud) and make sure to weave in an interesting fact or story to engage your audience.<\/p>\n

4. Active listening<\/h3>\n

Christine:<\/strong> Active listening and following up are crucial for making lasting impressions at networking events. Engaging genuinely in conversations, maintaining eye contact, and asking thoughtful questions demonstrate that you value others\u2019 insights. The way you relate to people in your first encounter reveals a lot, and first impressions are enduring. Therefore, focus on active listening and making the other person the centre of the conversation.<\/p>\n

Melanie:<\/strong> Indeed. Practise asking open questions, too. Listening is a superpower when wanting to build meaningful connections.<\/p>\n

5. Focus on the quality of the connections, not the quantity<\/h3>\n

Victoria:<\/strong> I try to focus on finding a small number of people who I can connect with, then think of an actionable follow-up. Now, you might come across just a handful of people, or sometimes even none, but that’s okay. It’s about the quality of the new connection and how you can potentially help each other, not the quantity.<\/p>\n

6. Follow up after the event<\/h3>\n

Christine:<\/strong> After the event, a simple follow-up email or message can solidify the relationships you’ve made. Mention specific points from your conversation to show attentiveness and sincerity (this becomes effortless with practiced active listening!).
