With the slightly cooler weather approaching (one can hope), more Hong Kongers are out and about under the sun (still loading up on sunscreen<\/a> though!). While hiking<\/a> and hitting the beach<\/a> are our all-time favourite activities, we also enjoy carefree afternoons flying kites high up in the sky. Gather your friends and family, pack a picnic<\/a> lunch, and head to the best places to fly kites in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Where to fly kites in Hong Kong<\/h2>\n

1. Tai Po Waterfront Park<\/h3>\n

As the largest public park<\/a> in Hong Kong, the Tai Po Waterfront area covers 22 hectares. So there is more open room for kite flying and fewer chances of getting tangled on a tree! The expansive grass lawn is great for kids to run around and burn off some energy while chasing after their kites. Plus, there\u2019s plenty more to do in the park; explore their insect house, herb garden, and the model boat pool. Their lawn garden is a popular wedding venue<\/a> amongst couples given its lush greenery \u2013 just don\u2019t let your kite be a wedding crasher!<\/p>\n

2. Tap Mun<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s travel to an island far, far away, with beautiful ocean views, surrounded by mountains all around. Tap Mun, also known as Grass Island, is a windy wonderland for flying kites \u2013 with some friendly cows wandering around your picnic mats looking for a nibble. Only accessible via ferry, the serene beauty of this island is worth the schlep.<\/p>\n

To get to Tap Mun, take the ferry from Wong Shek Pier.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Tai Mei Tuk<\/h3>\n

While Tai Mei Tuk is widely known for its cycling trail<\/a>, there are plenty of folks that stop their bikes by the reservoir to fly kites. It comes as no surprise that Tai Mei Tuk is crowded during holidays, so stopping your bike mid-way to fly your kite could be inconvenient to others. Cycle your way to the far end of the two kilometre route and there\u2019s plenty of space to let loose (your kite and yourself!).<\/p>\n

4. Nai Chung<\/h3>\n

This off-the-beaten-path village at the east of Ma On Shan is for those of you looking for a sweet spot to have all to yourself to fly kites. Nai Chung Pebbles Beach during low tide is a tranquil beach (even minus the sand) with gentle gusts of wind that\u2019ll have your kites flying high in no time. There are locally owned shops by the village to purchase a kite if you don\u2019t already have one. Beach go-ers are also fond of collecting the abundant seashells that wash ashore.<\/p>\n

5. Tai Au Mun<\/h3>\n

Is there anything to not love about the emerald waters of the Sai Kung<\/a> Peninsula? Pack for a day out with a picnic and some kite flying \u2013 what a way to unwind! Popular with stargazers, hikers, and families, Tai Au Mun\u2019s vast terrain also includes brisk walks and beginner-friendly hikes<\/a> if you want to try other activities before or after flying kites.<\/p>\n

6. Shek O Beach<\/h3>\n

A favourite beach<\/a> for many in the city, Shek O Beach is beloved for its accessible location, clean waters, and bbq<\/a> area. This is particularly a nice spot for Hong Kong Island-side kite enthusiasts to have a fun day out. If you don\u2019t already have a kite of your own, there are kiosks in the beachside village selling paper ones that are easy to get up in the air. There\u2019s plenty of sand to go around even when the beach gets busier so bring along your friends or family for a breezy day of kite flying.<\/p>\n

7. Tai Hang Tun Kite Flying Area<\/h3>\n

You can almost always count on a nice stiff breeze at Tai Hang Tun, making it a popular spot to fly kites in Hong Kong \u2013 so much so that there\u2019s even a designated kite flying area! This grassy slope in Clearwater Bay Country Park also has a great view of the water, making it the perfect place for a serene day of leisure. While some may bring their own prized kites over to fly, there are also kiosks in the area that sell paper kites for the more casual hobbyists. These sellers have refreshments to keep everyone hydrated enough throughout the day, too.<\/p>\n

To get to Tai Hang Tun Kite Flying Area, take the 103M minibus from Tseung Kwan O MTR Station.<\/em><\/p>\n
