And HBO Asia has just released its first ever horror anthology, that spans six different countries throughout Asia. Each story takes place in one of six Asian countries: Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, with each episode based on a deeply-rooted myth from each location.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s really cool about this idea, is that each episode is helmed by different directors from across Asia, and filmed in the local language, allowing the viewer to be introduced to brands of horror specific to each country, while still discussing themes relevant to any continent.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lc69XxZNL68&#038;feature=youtu.be<\/p>\n<h3>FOLKLORE: A Mother\u2019s Love<\/h3>\n<p>The first in the series that screens every Sunday is A Mother\u2019s Love, written and directed by Indonesian director Joko Anwar. Set in Jakarta, the story tells the tale of a forlorn single mother and her young son. After being evicted from their apartment, they discover a group of children living in the attic of the mansion they are cleaning. While the mother seemingly does the right thing by getting the police involved, strange things start happening and Wewe Gombel (an unsettled spirit) begins to enter their life and disrupt things even further.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160395\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-160395 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/Folklore-review-HBO-Asia-A-mothers-love.jpg\" alt=\"Folklore review A Mother's Love\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/Folklore-review-HBO-Asia-A-mothers-love.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/Folklore-review-HBO-Asia-A-mothers-love.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/Folklore-review-HBO-Asia-A-mothers-love.jpg 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/506;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first episode in the anthology is set in Jakarta and sees\u00a0Muzakki Ramdhan and\u00a0Marissa Anita play son and mother<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>FOLKLORE: A Mother\u2019s Love is wonderfully told with great cinematography and stellar performances by both Marissa Anita and Muzakki Ramdhan. As the young son Jodi, Ramdhan is highly believable and gives a memorable performance next to Anita. Personally, I\u2019d have loved to have found out a bit more about the Wewe Gombel spirit and how it is typically viewed in Indonesian culture, but it\u2019s quite hard to fit a lot of backstory into a 48-minute episode.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m definitely going to be tuning in for more from FOLKLORE.<\/p>\n<p><em>New episodes of FOLKLORE will debut at 10pm every Sunday on HBO.
