We&#8217;ve found <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/hong-kong\/vegetarian-restaurants-in-north-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vegetarian restaurants in North Point<\/a>\u00a0and the best <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/hong-kong\/vegan-restaurants-in-hong-kong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vegan restaurants in Hong Kong<\/a>, but after a rejuvenating class at <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/hong-kong\/nikita-ramchandani-kita-yoga-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kita Yoga<\/a> in Sheung Wan, Grassroots Pantry was the perfect spot for us to reenergise.\u00a0Offering an exciting vegetarian menu with a number of vegan options, Peggy Chan and her team concoct delicious food by marrying unique flavours and presenting them impeccably on the plate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why you need to visit Grassroots Pantry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Go Green or go home!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grassroots Pantry is led by Chef\/Founder Peggy Chan, who is also a key driver of Hong Kong\u2019s green-eating movement \u2013 a thoughtful effort to get more Hong Kongers to think before they eat. The team focuses on making every element of their dishes from scratch in order to steer away from unhealthy, refined or highly processed ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This homely space sports a relaxed community feel, boosting warm woods and plenty of greenery. There\u2019s a farmhouse vibe that means you won\u2019t be just in-and-out here, and we love how welcoming it feels. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What we tried (but the menu changes seasonally)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the menu are vegan, gluten-free, raw and of course organic options \u2013 a timely reminder that by being more eco-friendly with your food you\u2019re making a positive impact on the environment. So when the popcorn \u201cchicken\u201dstarter arrived at the table, we were bowled over by Peggy\u2019s tweak. \u00a0Instead of the typical chicken, it uses fresh hedgehog mushrooms that are sourced from Taiwan. This was a standout dish, and was oozing with goodness as it\u2019s high in minerals, amino acids and dietary fibres.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137843\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-137843 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/06\/DSC07685-e1496582497703.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"607\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/607;\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Popcorn &#8220;chicken&#8221; starter, where the &#8220;chicken&#8221; is replaced with hedgehog mushrooms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next dish, which also packs a nutritional punch, was the teff shiitake gnocchi. This pillowy gnocchi dish features\u00a0teff flour, an ancient grain from Ethiopia and the superfood du jour. Interestingly enough, the umami-rich &amp; dairy-free &#8220;cheese&#8221; used in this dish is made with smoked macadamia nuts,\u00a0and this spectacular combination was another winner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We loved the presentation of the bagna c\u00e0uda, a salad that looked like a mini garden in a flower pot &#8211; only difference, this one\u2019s edible! Filled with local spring vegetables, we thoroughly enjoyed drawing on the optimal nutritional benefits of each ingredient and dipping it into the fermented tofu cashew dip.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137844\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-137844 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/06\/DSC07709-e1496582692838.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"617\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/617;\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bagna c\u00e0uda &#8211; enjoy seasonal, local vegetables with fermented tofu cashew dip<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We couldn\u2019t wait to tuck into the macro tsukemono donburi, which we had heard so much about. In this dish, organic short grain brown rice is mixed alongside unagi, hijiki and black beans in coconut aminos teriyaki sauce. The addition of sansho-aonori (Japanese spices) and assorted homemade pickles are satisfyingly piquant and holds this robust dish together. We must admit that the savouriness is incredibly satiating.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137846\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-137846 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/06\/DSC07699-e1496582838144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"608\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/608;\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Macro tsukemono donburi &#8211; so much nutritional goodness in one plate!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although many non vegetarians may be apprehensive at first, Grassroots Pantry proves that taste doesn\u2019t need to be compromised when it comes to meat-free food.
