Home to <\/span>M\u0101ori culture, the All Blacks, Lord of the Rings, sweeping landscapes, and <\/span>divine pinot noir<\/span><\/a>; there are few countries that can rival the land of the long white cloud for outright awesome-ness. If New Zealand is perched on top of your <\/span>travel to-do list<\/span><\/a>, here\u2019s some handy inspo from the team at Lightfoot Travel<\/a> on where to stay and what to do on the North Island. As it\u2019s an 11-hour flight away from Singapore, we say go big and spoil yourself upon arrival!<\/span><\/p>\n

Huka Lodge \u2013 Lake Taupo<\/b><\/h3>\n

Why stay?<\/b><\/p>\n

Huka lodge<\/span><\/a> is so swish, even The Queen and Elton John have bedded down for the night (though not together, may we add!). Located on the banks of the Waikato River, the property epitomises old-school charm; think roaring fireplaces in each room, tartan blankets to take the chill off outdoor evenings, and hot water bottles placed under duvets during evening turndowns. Expect impeccable service from the outset as staff introduce themselves by name and treat you like an old friend. Dining at Huka Lodge is an event in itself; typical menus include the likes of pheasant smoked with pork belly, roasted scallops, pan fried snapper with diamond shell clams and roasted venison, all paired with local wines. Delish!<\/span><\/p>\n

Activities<\/b><\/p>\n

Wake up to the sound of the Waikato River right outside your suite, before learning to fly-fish from your very own front lawn. For something a little more adventurous, walk (or take the 80km an hour jet boat!) to the famous Huka Falls, hike the trail, and view the lodge from the other side of the river. There are numerous courses nearby for golf fans, and even a Hole in One Challenge at Lake Taupo; strike it lucky at the hole set up on a lake pontoon and walk away with NZ$10,000 prize money! Talk about a winning holiday, eh?<\/span><\/p>\n

In the area<\/b><\/p>\n

Rotorua and its geothermal hot springs are one hours drive away and a perfect day trip. Take in the unique sights (and sulphur smells!) before retreating back to your Huka haven.<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure to sample the exquisite cheese platter set up in the lounge after dinner; the selection is phenomenal. And don\u2019t forget to enquire about Rusty, the lodge cat, who roams the property at leisure and is quite the cutie!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers \u2013 Hawke\u2019s Bay<\/b><\/h3>\n

Why stay?<\/b><\/p>\n

Set on a 150-year-old working farm, the <\/span>Farm at Cape Kidnappers<\/b><\/a> is a dream for animal lovers; it\u2019s home to over 4,000 sheep, Angus cows, retired horses, and 80 kiwis! Built into an old farmhouse, it offers rustic luxury through heavy wood and steel furnishings, black and white photos of farm life displayed on the walls, and a silo that is ideal for private dining. Be sure to to catch the sunrise over the rolling fields and dramatic cliffs \u2013 a sight not to be missed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Activities<\/b><\/p>\n

The iconic Cape Kidnappers Golf Course is situated on pristine land lined by the towering cliffs of the Cape. Hole 15 \u2013 Pirate\u2019s Plank \u2013 is its signature with a 400-foot drop on the left, and a ravine to the right. Needless to say, it\u2019s a tough course! Be sure to make the most of the numerous trails crisscrossing the property and along the coastline; from easy and rambling walks, to rugged full-day excursions, the scenery is too beautiful to miss. Finally, the farm is also home to over 20,000 gannets, and just so happens to be the largest and most accessible mainland colony in the world! From October to April, they nest along the cliffs before embarking on their virgin flight to Australia. Take in the spectacle and watch them feed and bicker (yes, bicker!) among themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the area<\/b><\/p>\n

Hawke\u2019s Bay is the country\u2019s second largest wine-growing region and home to over 70 vineyards. Pop into one for a wine tasting lunch (<\/span>we recommend Craggy Range<\/span><\/a>), or do a cycling tour and visit several in one go. There are also opportunities for trout fishing, Maori tours, and scenic flights. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rise at dawn for an early morning walk or jog along one of the trails. Jump over cattle grids, swing through gates as you pass through the fields, and meet some of the farmers going about their daily work.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs \u2013 Matauri Bay<\/b><\/h3>\n

Why Stay?<\/b><\/p>\n

The stunningly beautiful suites at <\/span>Kauri Cliffs<\/b><\/a> are cosy and elegant, with jaw-dropping views of the ocean and adjacent golf course. Sister property to The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, the lodge is similarly situated on a huge expanse of working farmland. While there, look out for the local farmers who will take you on a farm tour and show off their working dogs in action as they herd flocks of sheep; it\u2019s a great experience for urban city dwellers!<\/span><\/p>\n

Activities<\/b><\/p>\n

During summer, The Lodge hosts different activities for guests each night, such as putting competitions, wine tastings, and local market visits. Every Friday, enjoy a Pink Beach BBQ that combines one of the most beautiful beaches in the country with a delicious spread of freshly grilled seafood, local meats, and produce. With numerous walking trails and even a 6,900 year-old Kauri Tree (the last of its kind!) on the property, there is no time for dull moments! The Kauri Cliffs golf course is also beautiful, with 15 of the 18 holes boasting spectacular sea views. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the area<\/b><\/p>\n

Arrive via helicopter over the Bay of Islands, an archipelago of 144 islands dotted among turquoise green seas. Sail through the bay on a fishing or diving excursion, or simply spend a day relaxing on one of its many beaches. For those with a sweet tooth, Makana Chocolate Factory in nearby Kerikeri is a fun day tour, and the tasting session is extremely popular with the littlest guests! <\/span><\/p>\n
