Whether it’s to volunteer in Hong Kong, adopt pets, or – if time is not your luxury – donate to charities and other organisations, it’s always good when you’re able to give back to the community and help others. There are plenty of organisations in the city that will happily accept your used items – second-hand clothes, old books, stationery etc. – or even brand new items that you’ve specially bought for those in need. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of trustworthy charity organisations, so you know where to donate in Hong Kong.
Where to donate in Hong Kong
1. Box of Hope
Set to help children from Hong Kong, Macau, China, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines, Box of Hope gathers approximately 30,000 gift boxes each year for children ranging from age 3 to 12. Technically, you can’t donate used goods to Box of Hope, but you’re welcome to buy brand new daily essentials like toothpaste, shampoo, and soaps, as well as fun things like pencil cases, colouring pens, toys, and Lego.

2. ImpactHK

ImpactHK looks out for the homeless community in Hong Kong, offering friendship, food, and a safe space, The Guestroom, in the daytime. Of course, financial contributions are always welcome, but they also require a number of items to carry out their mission, from food to clothing to furniture. Contact the team via email to see if your items would be of use. Alternatively, join them on one of their Kindness Walks and see that giving your time is one of the best ways to donate in Hong Kong.

3. Pathfinders

Dedicated to helping Hong Kong’s most vulnerable babies, children, and migrant women, Pathfinders does community outreach and provides social welfare, shelter, supplies, healthcare, education, and access to justice for pregnant, migrant domestic workers in distress, and their Hong Kong-born children. To support these programmes, the organisation accepts donations in the form of both one-off and recurring monthly donations. Donations of baby supplies are also welcome.

4. Po Leung Kuk

For over 140 years, Po Leung Kuk, a community-driven organisation, has been dedicated to providing welfare, educational, and cultural services, primarily to children, the elderly, and low-income families. The organisation graciously welcome both cash and in-kind donations. These donations – ranging from food, clothing, daily necessities, and household items, to furniture, toys, and stationery, all in good and clean condition – help meet the basic needs of its service recipients. By accepting such a wide range of items, Po Leung Kuk enhances the quality of life for those in need.

5. Christian Action

With a mission to help the disadvantaged, displaced, abandoned, and marginalised lead meaningful and productive lives, Christian Action is a Christian organisation that supports those in need in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Funded by donations, its initiatives include social and humanitarian projects for refugees, foreign domestic helpers, ethnic minorities, and immigrants from Mainland China; training programmes for the underprivileged and unemployed; and a green collection programme to protect the environment, create employment opportunities, and help the neediest people.

6. Mother’s Choice

Serving children without families and pregnant teenagers in Hong Kong, Mother’s Choice is a local charity that provides childcare and foster homes for kids without families. Its services help connect foster and adoptive families to children in need, provide youth with sexuality-education workshops, and provide pregnant teenagers with the necessary support. The organisation accepts both one-time and monthly donations through fundraising programmes. You can also donate much-needed baby items and supplies here.

7. St James’ Settlement

As a social service agency, St James’ Settlement provides youth, elderly, mentally handicapped, education, rehabilitation, community centre, continuing care, as well as family and counselling services. You can donate funds to support programmes of your choice and also items for specific uses and services. If you’re wondering where to donate in Hong Kong, St James’ is a great place to start with.

8. Rebooked

Got stacks of kids’ books collecting dust at your place? Don’t just chuck ’em – donate to Rebooked instead! This awesome initiative lets you pass along beloved titles to the next generation of bookworms. Founded by a teen entrepreneur, Rebooked takes your pre-loved novels, study guides, and storybooks and gives them new life through its used bookstore. It’s easy – just fill out a form for a free pick-up, then sit back as the team handles sorting and sales. For every 10 books you donate, you’ll get credit towards one free book from its site, too!

9. Salvation Army

Working in 128 countries including Hong Kong, the Salvation Army is a widely known international movement that actively responds to local needs, emergencies, and disasters through social and educational services. Serving Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China, our local office regularly accepts donations in the form of one-off contributions, regular giving, clothing, and goods such as toys, books, and electrical appliances. Part of the goods go directly to home-alone elderly, street sleepers, ex-prisoners, and CSSA recipients, while the rest are sold at Salvation Army’s family stores to support their community programmes.

10. Kids4Kids

Believing that young people can also make a difference through positive action, Kids4Kids’ programmes are run by kids and youth under 25. Initiatives include literacy development and youth empowerment, dedicated to assist children from low-income communities. You can support a wide variety of their projects by donating money as well as items such as books, stationery, art and craft materials, computers, laptops, and iPads.

11. Friends of the Earth

With a goal to protect the environment in Hong Kong, Friends of the Earth supports the sustainability and environmentalism through several initiatives. The organisation accepts donation of leftover food to be distributed to those in need, food waste to be composted, and used clothes, printer cartridges, and furniture to be donated or recycled.

12. Zara
If you call yourself a shopaholic, you’ll likely end up with a pile of unused clothes inside your wardrobe – something many of us feel guilty about. If that sounds like you, why not donate the clothes you no longer wear to any Zara store in Hong Kong, where you’ll find designated containers for your donated clothing? Your used clothes will then be given to people in need, sold for social benefits, reused for industrial material, and contribute to many other environmental and social causes.

13. H&M
Don’t know where to donate in Hong Kong and have loads of excess clothing? As part of its worldwide garment-collecting initiative, H&M collects used clothes of any brand at its stores. Just drop off your used clothes at any location of your choice and the brand will recycle the old garments, which will be given a new life by donation, being resold as second-hand items, or being transformed into other products or textile fibres.

14. Crossroads Foundation

A non-profit organisation, Crossroads Foundation provides aid to over 90 countries, as well as local people in Hong Kong. The name “Crossroads” reflects the organisation’s ethos to connect those in need with those willing to help. You’re welcome to donate money, electrical appliances, clothes, toys, and household goods.

15. Caritas

Living in Hong Kong, there’s no doubt that you will have heard of Caritas, as it has been operating since 1953. Caritas’s wide-ranging services include social work, education, medical care, community development, hospitality, and more. Contribute to Caritas through its fund-raising activities, volunteer work, clothing drives, or directly donate money to those in need.

16. Flow Bookshop

All the bibliophiles in Hong Kong must have been to Flow at some point, either to buy a second-hand book or donate their own. Since its opening in 1997, Flow has taken in almost half a million books – which is no surprise, given how how full the shop is! You can give books, CDs, and DVDs; all donations will either be directly sold to the public or donated to charity organisations.

17. Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth (HKFHY)

Established in 1970, Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth does incredible work supporting people with disabilities across Hong Kong. This organisation happily accept donations of used toys, stationery, and other useful items. Got a bunch of stuff to donate? No problem! The staff is super accommodating and will even arrange a pick-up service for you. Just remember to give them a heads-up a week or two in advance, as there are limited resources. And if you’re located on the Kowloon side, even better – you can easily drop off your donations at HKFHY’s Wong Tai Sin address.
