Escape the busy city by settling into the newly opened Garden Meow Cafe in PMQ, and enjoy delicious Taiwanese food and beer in a vintage setting.
New restaurants and bars are always popping up in and around the city, and Hong Kong isn’t short of a wide variation from Italian restaurants and Mexican restaurants to all the best Wan Chai burger joints. We’re also big fans of Chinese flavours, that’s why we headed over to PMQ to check out Garden Meow Cafe, a super-cool spot that serves delicious Taiwanese food and beer in rooms full of vintage furniture and trinkets.
Settle in at Garden Meow Cafe
Walk in and experience a cosy and eclectic environment at Garden Meow Cafe. The cafe is filled with vintage furniture, including tables, chairs, rare items like record players and even 1950s glass soda bottles which are supplied by the owner, who has been an avid collector of vintage pieces for decades. These pieces have an endearing charm and quality to them that transports you to a simpler and more homely time.
Taiwanese memorabilia is hung from the walls and ceilings, including banners and signs, and most importantly – true to its name – images of cats are seen on neon signs, glass cups and posters. Though the building does not allow animals (sad!), cat lovers will feel right at home alongside the entire Garden Meow Cafe team who are all admirers of the feline.
What can you eat?
We were sampled the Taiwanese Style Drunken Chicken with Cold Noodles which was perfect in the humid weather. The pure alcohol flavour brought out the soft and tender texture of the chicken while the thin white noodles were smooth and refreshingly light.
The classic Taiwanese Manchu Noodles Soup with Beef was nice and hearty, just don’t forget to mix in the meat sauce and spice to add a punch of jam-packed flavour. The beef tendons tasted like they had been marinated for days at a time, as they were springy and incredibly tender, while the noodles were nicely soft and fluffy.
Eat the Taiwanese Style Ginger and Wine Sauce Chicken with Rice while hot. The Taiwan bento-box style meal, had a mild Si-Chuan-esque spice, that was sweet and savoury all at once. The lunch set was nostalgic of the very essence of the country two hours North-East.
Try the sweet Taiwanese Brown Sugar Milk Tea that has rectangular herbal jellies, a must-have beverage at any Taiwanese-style restaurant or opt for a beer directly imported from the country of origin.
For those who want to up their Instagram game, we recommend that you order Walk Over The Cloud. The bright blue soda and cream drink had a large fluffy cotton candy cloud on top is sweet and adorably pretty, excellent for those who are in dire need of an exclusive photoshoot moment.
