The pandemic continues to pose challenges to all walks of life in Hong Kong especially within underprivileged communities. Since its launch on 15 November 2021, the Wellcome Rice Donation Charity Programme has donated over HK$700,000, equalling up to more than 1.2 million kilograms of Yu Pin King rice sold with the support of the customers. In addition to the daily-basis regular donation of rice sales, Wellcome introduced the “Festive Feast Up” product matching donation between 20 to 23 January 2022. Under this initiative, Wellcome had picked a selection of premium products from the Yu Pin King range and donated one for every customer purchase, doubling up the regular rice donations. In view of recent severe pandemic situation and to reduce the risk of transmission, Wellcome flexibly arranged a small number of volunteers from logistic team to quickly deliver the 2,000 caring bags raised to 7 charities in various districts in Hong Kong. Wellcome is committed to continually support the community as the haze of the pandemic shrouds the city.
The donated 2,000 Chinese New Year’s Caring Bags contain 6 premium Yu Pin King products – Thai Hom Mali Rice, Cashewnut Cookies, Egg Rolls, Pu-erh Teabag, Topshell Slice, and Sunflower Oil – allowing the beneficiaries to enjoy a plentiful festive meal.
Mr. Ian Mcleod, CEO of DFI Retail Group, parent company of Wellcome Supermarket, said, “We are very pleased that the Wellcome Rice Charity Programme was well-received and supported by customers and has raised festive meals for 2,000 families, allowing the beneficiaries to enjoy a plentiful Year of Tiger! Under this program, we will continue to regularly donate rice, fresh and dry foods, as well as matching our festive donations to support the underprivileged. We call for customers and the public to participate in this meaningful charity initiative, stand in solidarity with the most in need in the time of adversity.”
Ms. Aurea Yung, Head of Operations of Foodlink Foundation, said, “The recent wave of COVD-19 devastated the livelihood of many underprivileged families and the number of requests for assistance soared. DFI Retail Group and Wellcome have always been supportive of local charity work. The team has worked tirelessly to support those in need by providing monetary support, food supplies and volunteer manpower in accordance with social distancing measurements. The food donation will help over 2,000 families and play a key role in community support.”
