Taking over both floors of the gallery, the works explore imagery inspired by the artist’s recent trip to Hong Kong, while also reinvigorating a range of fantastical motifs that Dzama has investigated throughout his oeuvre. Hong Kong inspired influences include horse-racing leaflets, 1960s and 70s dance magazines and the incorporation of lyrics from Hong Kong singer Margaret Lee’s 1960s album covers. Dzama plays with meaning and experiments with composition through the incorporation of text in different languages in his works which can be clearly seen in Crossing the Line.
