Eaton HK honors International Mother Earth Day on 22 April by launching Humble Roots, a monthly long public programme highlighting the value and spirit of the farming of our city, which explores the inextricable connection between human, food and nature and reimagine this connection with land through art and culture. Working alongside local agricultural organizations, crafters, farmers and artists, Humble Roots will present a series of workshops, exhibitions, and installations that share local farming stories in a hopeful bid to realize the peaceful coexistence of humans and the planet.
Humble Roots starts with a one-month long photography exhibition in the public area of Eaton HK. Eaton’s buzzing Food Hall will be transformed with photography of Hong Kong’s agricultural landscapes and the farmers that steward the land. A sound installation of field recordings from local farming villages, created in collaboration with local art NGO Soundpocket, will play throughout the lobby whilst a nearby video by farmer Natalie Lo Lai Lai shares the stories of local farmers, honoring their work and the land they have nurtured in order to feed Hong Kong. Zines by local illustrators and writers, portraying the agrarian lives, wild animals, and plants in the city, will be showcased aside the community library in the lobby.
The public are also invited to engage with Hong Kong’s farming culture beyond these installations by signing up for interactive experiences hosted by our collaborators: an on-site workshop that delves into the practices of beekeeping with Beetales, a workshop on intersectional farming with Earth Farm, a fungiculture lecture and mushroom cultivation workshop with Urban Mushroom, a sustainable food-waste dyeing workshop with Dyelicious, and a family-friendly audio adventure that promotes environmental change with sound artist Brian Chu.
