Curated by He Guiyan, Flowers in the Mirror is an exhibition that displays around 20 oil and paper portraits, which were created by Chinese contemporary artist Pang Maokun. Modelling some of his friends and family, this series of paintings shows each person in front of a mirror and situated within an everyday environment. Rather than demonstrating flowery (pun intended) and painstaking levels of detail, Pang focuses on capturing the figure’s psychological state and exploring the artistic discourse of the gaze. If you’re interested in the mechanisms of viewing, or the juxtaposition between classical and contemporary paintings, Flowers in the Mirror is not to be missed.
