From the stunning artistry to the philosophical ideals expressed through movement, Asia Pacific Dance Platform will deliver two shows at HKAF 2019 to sweep you off your feet
Have you ever questioned the idea of robots – are they that much different from humans? What about the relationship between mankind and existence? This year, the 47th Hong Kong Arts Festival returns with an excellent array of performances including the Asia Pacific Dance Platform, which promises to deliver two thought-provoking shows that answer our philosophical ponderings. Taking place on 1-2 March and 12-13 March, we’re excited to catch the two critically-acclaimed shows – HUANG YI & KUKA and From Starting to Cut the Wood. Find out why below.
The 47th Hong Kong Arts Festival presents Asia Pacific Dance Platform
HUANG YI & KUKA
Presented by Asia Pacific Dance Platform, HUANG YI & KUKA is a heartwarming human-robot duet. Hoping to spin human emotions into robots, acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer and dancer Huang Yi and his robot companion KUKA – conceptualised and programmed by Huang himself – will bring a genuine poetic masterpiece that incorporates modern dance and robot.
Is the robot simulating the dancer’s movements or is it the other way around? Having toured globally since 2015 including in Australia, the US, Switzerland, and the UAE, Huang weaves together the art of dance and the science of mechanical engineering, and it’s guaranteed to make you reevaluate the proposition of robots (not to mention your own robot dance moves!)
From Starting to Cut the Wood
In collaboration with artists from Germany and Indonesia, From Starting to Cut the Wood is an eclectic live mix of dance, sound, mask-making, philosophy and performance. Welcomed by the sounds of the mask-maker’s tools – saw, ax, chisel, sandpaper and fine brush – dancer Ari Ersandi then translates them into movements, hence exploring the relationships among the body, materials, tools, work and the environment.
Surprise, surprise. The process of mask making is actually a metaphor of the relationship between mankind, work and existence. If you’re always baffled by existential questions, this show might just give you fresh perspective.
We can’t wait to take our seats for both these shows; see you there.
