Since arriving in Singapore from the UK nearly 18 months ago, I’ve had a total blast settling into my new home. The same, however, cannot be said for my hair. Since being introduced to Singapore’s humidity, it has rebelled in such spectacular fashion that it spends the vast majority of its time slicked back into one up-do or another. Don’t get me wrong, even in the colder climes of the UK, my hair and I were never on the best of terms; it’s thick, it’s frizzy, and has a mind of its own. But over the last few months, I’d reached breaking point; the hatred for my hair being so deep-seated that I even contemplated shaving it all off.
My curiosity was therefore piqued upon receiving an invite from Poise Hair Studio to try out its latest hair treatment – Japanese Cosme Cream – that promises to tame even the most uncompromising of manes. Having previously steered well clear of chemical straightening techniques due to a disastrous past experience (my hair turned to candy floss), I was a little nervous, not to mention sceptical, about this supposedly miraculous treatment. But with nothing to lose, I decided to throw caution to the wind and try it out. Heck, what’s the worst that could happen?
The salon and stylists
Nestled centrally near Dhoby Ghaut MRT, this minimalist salon is light, bright, and airy. I was greeted warmly by the staff upon arrival and introduced to Master Stylist, Qvin. After having a chat about my haircare routine (with poor Qvin patiently listening as I recounted the unequivocal wrath I felt each morning when having to deal with the mane!), he explained that Cosme Cream could alter the texture of my hair and improve it’s condition. I began to feel a tad optimistic; though I admit to scoffing when Qvin claimed he could make me love my hair. That, my friend, is mission impossible. Gauntlet thrown down, the treatment commenced…
The treatment
How does it work? Cosme Cream is a texture control treatment that transforms hair from being dull and frizzy to straight and shiny. But, it doesn’t flatten the hair in the same way that re-bonding does, so the hair retains natural movement and texture; it’s just less frizzy, and straighter. It’s also more affordable than a lot of other alternative treatments. Sounds too-good-to-be-true? I thought so as well…
The Cosme Cream application process is relatively straightforward; my hair was first washed (using gorgeous Kerastase products, no less) then rough dried. The first layer of cream was applied to my roots and worked in, before being gently heated for ten minutes. The cream was then applied to the lengths of my hair, followed by another 10 minutes of gentle heating. After another quick wash, it was then dried and straightened. Stage one: Complete! A second potion was then applied all over my hair and left for ten minutes before being rinsed off. And that was it; easy!
The magic truly became apparent upon my hair being dried. The frizz had vanished and the texture of my hair was truly different; it was now soft and silky, not coarse and rough. Qvin finished up by chopping in a few layers and getting rid of some bulk to leave me with a sharp, swishy finish.
The result
For the first time ever, I actually love my hair *wipes tears of joy from keyboard while typing*. I am finally one of those people who can wash, and go! I can let my hair dry naturally (I have never been able to do this and leave it loose) to retain a more natural wave with volume; or by running a hair iron through it, I can create a sleek, silky finish that withstands even the most extreme of temperatures. Since getting the treatment, I’ve subjected my hair to Singapore’s humidity, and the freezing, snowy climes of Japan. It seems whatever the weather, my hair remains frizz-free.
Will I be returning in six months for a top-up? You bet’cha. And as cuts and colour treatments are also competitively priced, I think I’ve just found myself a new hair salon.
