If you grew up in the ’90s, chances are, you would’ve had a triumphant emo phase. In case you’ve no idea what we’re talking about, we’re referencing that proud niche in music history when experimental alternative rock became paired with aggressive punk, and topped off with emotional vocals (hence the genre name) often expressed through wailing timbres and lyrics that’d make you cry. Together with peers like Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World and Something Corporate, Copeland is one American band that helped define the genre and usher it into the mainstream consciousness, before its popularity started to decline through the noughties. But turns out, you can now dry those hankies lest you’re still feeling FOMO for emo; this is one gig that’s bringing it all back.
Sure enough, this influential quartet is returning to Singapore to play a raucous set at TAB along Orchard Road, following up from their memorable 2010 show. “But wait, wasn’t that Copeland’s farewell tour where I wept like a baby and begged them not to break up,” you ask? You’re absolutely right, which is why this concert is an even bigger deal… Copeland is back and on the road! After an abysmal six-year hiatus, Aaron Marsh and his crew are back to spark off old memories and prove that they’ve still got it.

While their comeback album, Ixora, showcased a more mature aesthetic with novel electronic elements and less blistering rock-outs, you don’t have to worry if all you wanna do is mosh ’til you’re mental. Not only is Copeland’s By Request show part of their comeback tour, it’s also completely open to fans’ preferences – in other words, it’s you fans who choose the setlist! So whether we see a more mellow Copeland or one that soundtracked the rebellious years of our youth, it’s all up to you. Just do all of us a favour and put in faves like “Pin Your Wings” and “Love Is A Fast Song”, kay?
