For some, Sundays are either synonymous with brunch, or being a slob at home and maximising couch potato capacity while surrounded by Do Not Disturb signs. But for many others – especially those who crave one final hoorah before the Monday blues sink in – they party like there’s no tomorrow. If you fall within the latter category (cheers to you), you would probably be acquainted with the now-defunct alfresco party series known as Sunday At The Training Shed – a monthly musical powwow put together by the Sideshow crew. Now unless you’ve been following these chill promoters’ updates, you might have not yet realised that while The Training Shed has been vacated, albeit by ravers, the Sunday shenanigans continue to go on. And its new base of operations? Keep reading…
As if the Orchard area couldn’t get any cooler, the artsy Kult Gallery made waves in the nightlife scene when it revealed Kult Kafe. And aside from being one of our Hot New Bars, turns out, it’s also the new home for Sideshow’s Sunday parties – cue the revelries! Thankfully, there’s one bash happening just ’round the corner, and it’s gonna be a biggie with the guest appearance of L.A.-honed Briton, KUTMAH.
A slider with the ID of 508 doesn't exist.Don’t sulk if you haven’t heard of him; KUTMAH’s intentionally endured as an underground presence these last few years, but don’t mistake this for a want of deck quality. As a DJ and producer, KUTMAH launched his SKETCHBOOK nights in the early 2000s, forging the way for the legendary L.A. beat scene that, in turn, forged the careers of Tokimonsta and Nosaj Thing. Want another credential? KUTMAH is also pally-wally with the Brainfeeder label – the brainchild of one Flying Lotus who’s arriving to SG in May. Slicing up influences from urban hip-hop, fuzzy chill-wave, and even vintage oldies, KUTMAH is a master who tosses twists and turns on the dance floor.
And what’s possibly better than the fact that this party has no cover charge (only if you arrive between 6pm-9pm), is that it’s co-organised by local imprint, Darker Than Wax. Sounds familiar? These are the guys (and gals) responsible for some of the ace acts who graced the SingJazz festival just last week, and they themselves have an adroit squad of hip-hop, disco, funk and soul DJs. Rah and William J will represent DTW, with Sideshow’s own Shellsuit joining the line-up. We hear ya; Sundays just got cool again.
Darker Than Wax and Sideshow present KUTMAH, 13 March, Kult Kafe, 1 Upper Wilkie Road, Singapore 228120, p. 9190 1481. Free entry from 6pm-9pm, $20 (including one drink) after 9pm, pre-sale available from this website.
