I loooove Japanese food, and one of the good things about living here in Bali is that we’re never short on great Japanese restaurants. From affordable ramen shops, exclusive omakase counters, the odd sushi place hidden behind an unmarked door, you’ve got options. But how many of those also throw in a rooftop pool, a DJ set, and still takes the food seriously? I’m pretty sure there’s only one, and that’s MYKAZA<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the new Japanese at The Arc House Canggu.<\/p>\n

I ran as fast as I could to check out this new Canggu opening, and I was lucky enough to also try their weekly Sunday brunch…<\/p>\n

A Japanese izakaya, the Bali way<\/h3>\n

Want modern energy or something more traditionally Japanese? MYKAZA gives you both without leaving the building.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At first glance, MYKAZA<\/strong><\/a> could be described as a Japanese izakaya. But after my visit, tasting the food and a few conversations with the team behind it, it’s easy to see it’s so much more. The team has spent enough time in Bali, eating at warungs<\/em>, talking to local fishermen, experimenting with local ingredients like sambal<\/em> and jamu<\/em>. And that research paid off. Their menu is now built around Japanese techniques and Balinese ingredients, making it a unique experience while still keeping the food authentic.<\/p>\n

It’s not big, but the place feels spacious. The indoor area splits into two moods. There’s the main dining room that runs along arched windows with dark leather chairs, marble tables and a wall of manga-style art. It feels very modern, but in the best way. Want something more traditional and authentically Japanese? Well, they also have a tatami<\/em> room (sliding doors and all) with low floor chairs set around a long black table. It’s perfect if you’re celebrating something and want a little more privacy.<\/p>\n

Time it right, and you can enjoy a beautiful sunset on the outdoor terrace. There’s a rattan sofa set-up right by the pool and once a week, that’s also where the DJ sets up for Sunday brunch. But more on that later…<\/p>\n

Now to my favourite part: the menu. In a lot of fusion places, one cuisine ends up doing all the heavy lifting while the other just gets name-dropped. Not here. Right from the start, my heart was set on the Babi Guling Dry Ramen. How can I not? Babi guling is the dish I’m always hunting down in Bali, and here it’s combined with noodles tossed through a bone broth reduction, an ajitama<\/em> egg and crispy shallots on top. Every bite was so flavourful and bold I’m still thinking about it to this day.<\/p>\n

My friend had the Katsu Bali Curry, and of course I had a bite (or three). They swapped the usual Japanese curry for a Balinese one \u2013 more spiced, more fragrant, with a chilli kick. And it’s not a Japanese feast without miso, so we ordered the Hamachi Miso Matah as well. The den miso brought a deep, savoury sweetness, and the sambal matah<\/em> spooned on top cut straight through it with a sharp, raw-shallot heat, so it never sat too heavy.<\/p>\n

Think that’s where the mash-up stops? Not even close. It carries straight through to the drinks too. Spice of Island is MYKAZA’s take on jamu<\/em>, made with Arak Bali, and there’s a full list of tea-based cocktails if you want something lighter than a full pour.<\/p>\n

Lucky me, I was one of the first to try MYKAZA’s Sunday brunch. One price gets you the whole set menu, which you can order as much as you like. Go food-only with the Food Set, or step up to the Food & Drinks Set for three hours of free-flow drinks on top. Think bottomless signature cocktails or a glass of Spritz kept topped up by the pool, while the DJ keeps the whole afternoon easy.<\/p>\n

The food list runs long, from yakitori to sushi rolls. My pick was the Ebi Katsu Embe, with crispy prawn katsu piled with sambal embe,<\/em> Bali’s fried-shallot sambal<\/em>. The Chicken Sando is seriously good too, just order it to share as it’s quite a big portion and you’ll want room left for the rest of the list. Oh, and I have to mention the Matcha-Miso Dadar Gulung. It’s a crepe filled with matcha and miso, a delightful twist on a beloved Indonesian dessert.<\/p>\n

My thoughts on MYKAZA…<\/h3>\n

There’s always something new in Canggu, and MYKAZA is definitely one to check out. Aside from the food, the space works just as well for a sit-down dinner as it does for a pool party on the rooftop overlooking Canggu’s sunset. Or even something more celebratory like a birthday dinner. MYKAZA can flex to either, and that adaptability is one of its strengths. In short, I will be back again for that Sunday brunch.
