Entourage Bali wanted an exclusive club. Well\u2026 it just got itself an exclusive ban. On 23 July 2026, the two Dutch founders behind the Canggu running community left Indonesia for Singapore. Not long after, Indonesia’s Director-General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, confirmed they wouldn’t be let back in. He called the club “a state within a state.” All of this came after screenshots went viral, showing Entourage Bali’s approval process waving through foreign applicants. Indonesian applicants, meanwhile, got rejected or left hanging.<\/p>\n

I’m a beginner runner, slow and nowhere near marathon-ready, but I get out most weeks here in Bali. Judging by those screenshots, my +62 number alone would’ve been enough to get me rejected from a club operating in my own country<\/em>. I won’t pretend this is just about a running club. It’s about locals being treated like a guest in their own home, and this isn’t the first time it’s happened.<\/p>\n

Bali’s hospitality was never a loophole<\/h3>\n

Bali is a wonderful place to live. The people are genuinely warm and the culture doesn’t water itself down for outsiders \u2013 it’s as thick as it’s ever been, offered freely. Want to join a temple ceremony? Someone will lend you a sarong and show you where to stand. Want to try melukat<\/em>, the purification ritual at holy springs? There’s space in the queue. That’s not a performance for tourists. It’s just how this island works.<\/p>\n

But that openness was never meant to be read as a loophole, or some unwritten rule that says the more welcoming a place is, the less it’s owed in return. My personal hero, Ni Luh Djelantik<\/a>, the DPD RI member who pushed this case to immigration, put it better than I could:<\/p>\n

Bali is welcoming, but our hospitality should never be mistaken for a licence to disrespect us. Utilising public spaces while rejecting local residents is unacceptable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That’s really the whole argument. Somewhere along the way, “the locals are friendly” turned into “the locals won’t push back,” and those are not the same sentence. Entourage Bali’s apology called the rejections a glitch in an automated system. An automated system that decides on its own that a German boyfriend gets waved through while his Indonesian girlfriend doesn’t, literally in the span of minutes? I don’t think so.<\/p>\n

This wasn’t a one-off<\/h3>\n

Strip away the running shoes and this is a story I could tell a dozen different ways. We’ve let plenty slide over the years, and some of that is on us. Foreigners have long ridden through Canggu without a helmet or a licence, engines modified loud enough to rattle shutters, and for the most part it went unpunished. So-called “digital nomads” built entire followings filming sponsored content in Ubud’s rice terraces on a plain tourist visa. And for years nobody checked. Leniency became the default, and Entourage Bali counted on that default holding. But recent crackdowns on illegal work and traffic violations in Bali show that default is finally starting to break.<\/p>\n

After fleeing (or should I say… running<\/em> away from?) the country, the founders are now officially banned from entering Indonesia. Entourage Bali’s Instagram<\/a> has gone quiet, its events paused indefinitely. On paper, this looks like the system worked.<\/p>\n

Except it took a viral screenshot to get there, not the club stopping to ask itself why an Indonesian phone number needed extra scrutiny before someone could go for a jog. Immigration didn’t catch this first. Social media did, and immigration followed. That’s the part still worth fixing. Entourage Bali’s ban proves the government can enforce its own rules when it decides to. It shouldn’t take something going viral to make it worth acting on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coming from a local runner in Bali<\/h3>\n

Here’s why I might come off angry through all this: because I am. And sad. It shouldn’t have happened. It saddens me knowing the locals who built this place into what it is go through something like this more often than they should. It’s just not right.<\/p>\n

But I’m hopeful too, because every time this gets called out properly instead of just being apologised away, it gets a little harder for the next Entourage Bali to get away with it. This isn’t about the running club down the road that actually welcomes everyone, or the nomad who bothers to learn even ten words of Bahasa. It’s about the ones who built a gate and didn’t think anyone would check who they were letting through.<\/p>\n

I’m still running, on the same roads Entourage Bali once ran through, with the same +62 number that would have gotten me rejected. And to the runners still defending the club, because I know there are some: ready, set, go home. Not because we don’t want you here.
