Behind the explosive interiors is a kitchen that\u2019s been slinging seriously good, traditional Mexican food for years. From hand-pressed masa tortillas to top-shelf mezcal, Motel Mexicola is a true Bali icon \u2013 not just for the cocktails, but for the food that started it all.<\/p>\n

Twelve years strong and still spicing things up<\/h3>\n

Just one step inside Motel Mexicola Seminyak and you’re whisked away to Mexico City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Mexicola is essentially the beating heart of Seminyak. It opened way back in 2013 on Jalan Kayu Jati, and if you ask me, I’d say it single-handedly put this corner of Seminyak on the map. You can’t miss it either \u2013 it’s a bold, technicolour take on 1960s Acapulco. There are neon shrines, geometric tiles, vintage curios, and maximalist artwork. But while the interiors are unforgettable, it\u2019s what\u2019s on the plate that’s kept me coming back all these years…<\/p>\n

Mexicola’s real magic? The food.<\/h3>\n

If you haven’t tried Mexicola’s full dinner experience, you’ve missed the best part<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I remember the first time I ever visited Motel Mexicola \u2013 I overheard people at the bar raving about the authentic Mexican food they’d devoured a few hours earlier. I knew I\u2019d missed the best part. So, I made it my mission to come back for the full dinner experience. And when I finally got a taste of Mexicola\u2019s real magic? That\u2019s when I truly understood what this place is all about.<\/p>\n

The food here is the unsung hero. The kitchen fires out street-style Mexican classics, alongside a dedicated Taquer\u00eda that slings fire-kissed tacos, zingy tostadas and the best aguachile this side of the equator. They even make their own proper corn tortillas, hand-pressed daily using imported Mexican masa. Every dish is loaded with flavour, and the kind of soul you only get from chefs who really care about where their food comes from.<\/p>\n

Authentic Mexican flavours done right<\/h3>\n

Turn up early to Motel Mexicola and you\u2019ll find an aesthetic Mexican restaurant with a chilled setting and seriously good food. It’s even open for lunch, a pre-sunset feed, and of course, a lively dinner.<\/p>\n

I recommend ordering a table-full of plates to share, starting with the\u00a0fresh Aguachile Mixto: snapper, calamari, prawn and octopus. Then, it’s all about those masa tortillas. Try the Al Pastor Tacos, Tostada Pollo, and the oozy Quesadilla topped with Mexican chorizo.<\/p>\n

It’s the kind of food that brings people together. Bold, colourful small plates filling the table, hands diving in, and cocktails clinking in between bites. And yes, you\u2019ll want to leave room for dessert \u2013 the churros are fried to golden perfection, best dunked in a silky dulce de leche.<\/p>\n

The “Feed Me” Menu: Don’t think, just eat<\/h3>\n

If you really want the full Mexicola experience, skip the decision-making and go all-in on the Feed Me Menu. This is where the chefs take the reins and send out a rolling parade of signature standouts. You\u2019ll kick things off with two starters, like smokey esquites (grilled corn) slathered in chipotle mayo, before diving into tacos or at\u00fan tostadas.<\/p>\n

Then, it\u2019s on to the middle course \u2013 think fire-grilled camarones or something fresh and zesty. When the main event lands, bold, hearty plates steal the show, like slow-braised pancita and fall-off-the-bone chamorro de borrego, served with a round of sides.<\/p>\n

Just when you think you\u2019re done, dessert rounds it all off. Maybe silky arroz con leche, maybe those legendary churros. Pair it all with a Yerbabuena, a Paloma Dorada, or a frozen margarita, and you\u2019ve officially done Mexicola the right way.<\/p>\n

Margaritas, mezcal and that Mexicola magic<\/h3>\n

As you’d expect, the drinks at Motel Mexicola are just as thoughtful. In fact, they’ve been whipped up by the man who literally puts the flair in flair bartending, Denny Bakiev. There are endless lists of top-shelf mezcals and tequilas here. Plus, a series of classic and tropical margaritas, all spiked with 100% blue agave tequila. And if you\u2019re not into tequila, there’s plenty of signatures you can try too. I can’t get enough of the vodka-based La Bonita, or the Caf\u00e9 Mexicola for a citrusy twist on an Espresso Martini.<\/p>\n

In fact, Mexicola\u2019s drinks game is so strong, they\u2019ve got the World Record to prove it, serving for most amount of margaritas in 8 hours (a whopping 2,728 margaritas to be exact!).<\/p>\n

Next stop: Uluwatu!<\/h3>\n
