It’s often called “Bali before the crowds”, and the difference in traffic is immediately noticeable. Think wide, palm-fringed roads that wind through dramatic hills and past hidden bays. Just driving along the coastline is a treat. The surrounding area includes a handful of distinct spots worth knowing too, namely:
– Gerupuk – a fishing village to the east of Kuta Lombok town centre, with world-class waves.
– Selong Belanak – a sweeping white-sand bay about 25 minutes west.
– Serangan – a quieter coastal stretch with some of the region’s best boutique resorts.

Together, they make up what most people loosely refer to as the “Kuta Lombok area”.

How to get to Kuta Lombok

By plane: The easiest way is to fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP). Direct flights run from Bali (roughly 20 minutes), Jakarta, and several major Southeast Asian hubs every single day. From the airport, it’s about a 30-minute drive to Kuta on a nice wide road (no traffic!) for around IDR 200,000. I recommend arranging a driver in advance to avoid the hustle at Arrivals.

By boat from Bali: You can take a fast boat from Padang bai in Bali to Lombok’s west coast (Bangsal or Senggigi), then hire a car or scooter for a scenic two-hour drive south to Kuta. It’s a longer journey (approx. 3–4 hours), and if there are big waves and a lot of wind, the boat ride over can be rough!

Getting around Kuta Lombok: A scooter is the best way to explore. Most guesthouses and hotels can arrange a rental, and you can expect to pay around IDR 70,000–100,000 per day. If you’d rather not ride, hire a local driver for the day (around IDR 350,000–500,000 depending on how far you go). Grab is now also available in Kuta, though coverage and availability can be patchy in the more remote spots.

How long should you stay in Kuta Lombok?

Aim for at least 3 to 5 days to really soak up the area. That gives you time to explore the beaches, get a surf lesson or two, eat your way through the best cafes, and do at least one scenic scooter ride along the coast. Honest warning: most people wish they’d booked longer. Once you settle in, Kuta Lombok has a way of making you stay (I stayed for 2 weeks, when I’d only planned 5 days!).

Where to stay in Kuta Lombok: An area guide

Kuta Lombok is more than just one strip – the area is made up of several distinct pockets, each with a different feel. Choosing the right base makes a big difference to your trip. Here’s a breakdown.

Kuta Town Centre

The heart of Kuta Lombok revolves around the main intersection – a buzzy crossroads lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and surf shops. If you want to roll out of bed and have a flat white in hand within five minutes, this is your spot. Kuta Beach and the new Mandalika area are right on the doorstep, and you’re within easy reach of everything without needing a scooter for every errand. It’s the most convenient base, especially for shorter stays.
Best for: walking everywhere, first-time visitors, great food and nightlife.

Prabu Hill

About five minutes from the centre, the hillside neighbourhood above Kuta offers something the town itself can’t: sweeping views across the bay. Several of the most gorgeous boutique stays and villas sit up here, and waking up to that panorama every morning is hard to beat. You’re still close to everything, and you have easy access to quieter spots like Are Guling beach.
Best for: couples, sunset views, anyone who doesn’t mind a short scooter ride into town.

Gerupuk

Gerupuk is a small fishing village about 10 minutes out of Kuta, and it’s the launch point for the famous Gerupuk Bay surf breaks – some of the best waves in Lombok, accessed by local boat. It’s raw, unpretentious and still very local in feel. The village itself is dusty and functional rather than pretty, and the beach here isn’t one for sunbathing. But if surfing is your entire reason for being in Lombok, there’s a strong argument for staying here. A handful of surf camps and guesthouses have set up nearby in recent years, plus a few simple cafes for post-surf refuelling.
Best for: serious surfers, surf camps, and those who want a more local experience.

Selong Belanak

Around 20 minutes west of Kuta town, Selong Belanak is one of the most beautiful bays in Indonesia – a long, crescent-shaped stretch of white sand backed by green hills, with calm, swimmable water and barely any development. It feels like its own self-contained world. If your version of a perfect holiday involves morning walks along the beach, afternoon swims and sundowners with your feet in the sand, this is where you want to be. More family-friendly than the town, and a world away from any of the surf camp jostle.
Best for: families, couples and beach lovers who want an on-the-sand stay.

Serangan

Further up the coast from Selong Belanak, Serangan is where you go to escape entirely. It’s home to some of the fanciest resorts in the region, with infinity pools, a gorgeous beach, boutique beach clubs, and untouched scenery. Despite the sense of seclusion, you’re only around 25 minutes from Kuta town when you do want a change of scene. The beach here is beautiful and the surf break is world-class. If budget isn’t the top priority and peace and beauty are, stay in Serangan.
Best for: a secluded retreat for those wanting somewhere to truly switch off.

The best hotels & resorts in Kuta Lombok

From budget-friendly hotels to boutique hillside resorts with sweeping bay views, Kuta Lombok has accommodation options for every type of traveller. Here are our top picks:

1. Sempiak Seaside Resort

Boutique beachfront and hillside resort in Lombok with villas, bay views and authentic local experiences.

Sempiak Seaside Resort is the only hotel that’s located both directly on the beach AND in the hills!

It’s not often that a resort is both luxurious and steeped in nature, but Sempiak Seaside Resort breaks that mould. It was the first luxury hotel to open in Selong Belanak – the sprawling white-sand bay just 25 minutes from Kuta – and yet, it feels more like a refined boutique stay than a resort. Deeply rooted in the local community, you encounter Lombok’s crafts, cuisine and culture at every turn.

There are just 18 Scenic Villas and Holiday Houses, each individually designed. The Scenic Villas sit high in the hillside with sweeping views over the bay — waking up to waves and birdsong is something else. Direct beach access to Selong Belanak’s powdery sands, an onsite spa, and a private beach club next to the beachfront restaurant Laut Biru round it all out. Most guests here return year after year, and the all-local team (many of whom remember your name) is a big part of why.

Best for: Families and couples who want a genuine Lombok experience.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 1,666,667
Address: Jl Datuk Lopan, Selong Belanak, Lombok

Book Sempiak Seaside Resort

2. There are BBQ nights, live pasta, oyster days, sangria sundowners, plus floating breakfasts, beach picnics and romantic dinners for those marking something special. A spa, yoga and gym are also on hand for anyone who wants more than horizontal beach time. This resort might be further from the busier parts of town, but the full range of facilities means nothing is missing.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, and anyone after a beachfront stay with real soul.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 1,100,000
Address: Torok Bay, Montong Ajan, Lombok

Book Amber Lombok Beach Resort

4. Go at sunset and watch the bay turn golden. From different points along the ridge, you can access hidden coves below — bring water, wear decent shoes and plan to stay a while.

2. Book a boat trip to the Gerupuk breaks

Even if you’re not surfing, a boat trip out to the Gerupuk breaks is worth it. Local fishermen run small boats from the village to the various breaks — it’s a fun, up-close way to watch some serious surfing, and the views of the coast from the water are incredible.

3. Bliss out at Matcha Spa

On one of Kuta Lombok’s main strips, Matcha Spa has an impressive number of highly-trained therapists and a wide menu of treatments: massages, facials, body scrubs and nail treatments. A proper, affordable post-surf recovery session.

4. Take a yoga class at Ashtari

Ashtari‘s open-air shala sits atop the hills overlooking Kuta Bay — one of the most beautiful places to practice yoga anywhere. Keep an eye on the trees during your downward dog: this is prime monkey-spotting territory. Ashtari runs classes at several hotel locations around Kuta Lombok, so check their schedule for details.

5. Work up a sweat at Loka Gym

For the gym-goers who don’t take holidays off: Loka Gym has you covered. Daily CrossFit and Muay Thai classes, plus an adjoining health cafe with a nutritionist-curated menu for post-workout refuelling. Treat it as a balance-out for all the great meals you’re eating.

6. Shop surf gear at Flow Surf Store

If you need to stock up on boards or apparel, Flow Surf Store carries an excellent range of premium brands including Channel Islands and Hayden Shapes, plus the latest in surf and island wear. Day trip to the Gili Islands

The three Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — are easily accessible from Lombok’s north coast. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Kuta to Bangsal harbour, then a short boat ride across. Gili Air is the most relaxed; Gili T is the party one; Gili Meno is honeymoon territory.

8. Trek Mount Rinjani

Lombok’s volcanic centrepiece — 3,726 metres tall and genuinely awe-inspiring. Rinjani treks typically depart from Senaru or Sembalun in the north of the island, which makes it a two-day trip from Kuta Lombok. Most organised tours include transport, guides, accommodation and meals.

The best beaches near Kuta Lombok

This is what you came for. It’s the most well-known beach near Kuta, but still peaceful enough to feel special. Calm waters make it brilliant for swimming, and it’s right next to Merese Hill for a hike after your swim.

How to get there: 20-minute scooter ride east of Kuta
Best for: Swimming, photos, Merese Hill hike

2. There are mellow beach breaks for first-timers, punchy reef breaks for intermediates, and hollow waves for those chasing something more serious. Here’s what’s out there.

The surf breaks

Gerupuk Bay is the main surf hub, home to three distinct breaks: Inside, Outside, and DonDons. Inside and DonDons are the most popular beginner waves, accessible by a short boat ride from the village. Note: they’re crowded with surf schools and boatloads of students being pushed in. It can get chaotic and dangerous. Outside is bigger with multiple take-off points, better suited to intermediate surfers.

Selong Belanak is where complete beginners should start. It’s a small, crumbly beach break with a sandy bottom. You can focus on learning to stand up rather than worrying about the wave.

Tanjung Aan is a mellow reef break inside a wide bay ideal for longboarding, with both a left and a right. It’s one of the most popular spots in the area, so expect a crowd.

Mawi is one of the most exposed surf breaks, picking up swell easily. It’s an A-frame reef break, with both left and right-hand waves. It breaks onto a sharp live reef, so this one’s not for beginners.

Are Guling is a beautiful bay with a big channel that splits into a left and a right. The left can get hollow, while the right is fast and performance-oriented. It’s for intermediates and above.

Seger is the best break within reach of Kuta town. It’s about 15 minutes along a bumpy road that winds around the headland past the new racetrack. There’s a left and a right, with the left being the more approachable.

The best surf schools & surf retreats in Kuta Lombok

With crystal clear waters and a range of surf breaks for all levels, surfing is a must in Lombok. This is the most popular time to visit. October to April is the wet season — tropical downpours are common, though mornings are often still beautiful. Waves are often at their best during this period for experienced surfers.

Is Lombok safe for tourists?

Yes — Lombok is generally considered very safe for tourists. Standard travel common sense applies: keep valuables secure, stay aware of the ocean conditions before swimming, and be mindful of local customs, especially around temples and ceremonies.

How much does it cost?

Lombok is excellent value. Budget travellers can eat well for IDR 50,000–80,000 per meal, stay in a decent guesthouse for IDR 200,000–400,000 per night, and rent a scooter for IDR 70,000–100,000 per day. Mid-range and boutique options are still very affordable by international standards.

What’s the local culture like?

Lombok’s culture is primarily shaped by the indigenous Sasak people, whose traditions, handicrafts and architecture are distinct from Bali. The majority of the population is Muslim, so it’s respectful to dress modestly when visiting villages or local markets, and to be mindful of prayer times. The local warmth and hospitality in Kuta Lombok is something you’ll notice immediately.

Kuta Lombok pros & cons (and what to know before you go)

Pros: Why people LOVE Kuta Lombok

The beaches are breathtaking. Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun — the coastline around Kuta is genuinely world-class, and the lack of mass tourism means you can still find stretches of white sand that feel entirely your own.

No traffic, and gorgeous drives. Once you get out of the town centre, Lombok opens up into something spectacular: wide, smooth roads that wind through rolling green hills and past hidden bays, with almost no traffic. A scooter ride along the coast is one of the great travel experiences in Indonesia. The landscapes are dramatic and largely untouched — it rewards exploration in a way that Bali no longer can.

It feels like Bali 15 years ago. Kuta Lombok still has the laid-back rhythm that Bali used to have. Locals are warm, things run on island time, and there’s a genuine mix of travellers and community life. You can eat well, surf well and spend almost nothing — or push the budget on a stunning boutique resort with views across the bay.

The surf is world-class. Gerupuk Bay, Are Guling and Serangan — there are quality breaks for intermediate and advanced surfers, and the surf culture here feels unpretentious.

Cons: What people complain about

The surf at Gerupuk is chaotic. Gerupuk Inside is one of the most popular beginner breaks in Lombok, so surf schools send boat-loads of students out simultaneously and drop-ins happen constantly.

Religious and more conservative compared to Bali. Lombok is predominantly Muslim, and fundamental to the culture. Prayers ring out five times a day from the mosques, which some find noisy (pack ear-plugs for nighttime). Keep a sarong in your bag, and dress respectfully when visiting local villages or markets. Unlike Bali, this isn’t where you’ll see people wandering the main street in bikinis.

The town centre is dusty and busy. The main intersection has charm, but it’s loud, and roads are clogged with scooters. But, head five minutes in any direction and the scenery transforms completely.

Development is creeping in. The hillsides that once framed sweeping, uninterrupted views of the coast now have construction projects dotting the ridgeline. There’s still enormous beauty here, so visit sooner rather than later if you want to see it at its best.

The beach in Kuta town itself is average. Don’t base your whole trip on Kuta Beach — it’s functional but not the reason to come. Rent a scooter and get out to the bays. That’s where Lombok’s magic lives.

Love this complete guide to Kuta Lombok? My passion for Indonesia runs deep: I’ve explored 50+ islands across the archipelago, and I’ve personally reviewed more than 500 hotels, restaurants, bars, and spas throughout Bali. Every recommendation I share comes from real experience, shaped by years of living, working, and travelling here. Whether you’re chasing hidden beaches, the hottest new restaurants, or authentic cultural sites, you’re getting trusted advice from someone who truly knows and loves Bali.
Bali travel","food","luxury hotels","Indonesian culture
English","Indonesian
