Shop till you drop at Bali's treasure trove of beautiful Asian homewares, accessories and jewellery
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to take a grand bazaar shopping tour for jewellery, accessories and homewares across the entire continent of Asia, but right here in Bali?
Starting in Bhutan where you could pick up eclectic tablecloths and traditionally woven bags of fuchsia pinks and flamboyant blues. Heading on to Nepal where you’d collect more silver than your luggage allowance (combined with your partner’s luggage allowance) would ever allow. And perhaps finishing off in Afghanistan, where deep red rugs would be the order of the day. Just imagine.
Well thankfully for those of us without the means and determination to make such a sojourn, or love Bali too much to leave the island, you can now relax – because Saya Galleries exists. Found in two convenient locations, they showcase the best homewares, decorative jewelry, accessories, and artwork from the stylistically distinct regions of Asia.
Despite this broad scope of Asian goods, Indonesia isn’t forgotten. Sift through ceremonial statues from Timor, terracotta pieces from Java and woodcarvings from Borneo. The owner, Loraine, who has migrated her skills to Bali from the Netherlands, has even crafted some of her own jewelry using robust natural materials like horn, bone, gemstone, silver and gold.
Travellers, brace yourself for the possibility of walking out with a shipping container to book; those hammered copper light fixtures and Papua New Guinean painting aren’t likely to fit in your suitcase. Everyone else, just brace yourself for whipping out the credit card – without a single ounce of buyers remorse to follow.
