Owner of the legendary Made's Warung
Growing up with the legacy that is Made’s Warung, it was clear to me that it all came down to the blood, sweat and tears of my parents. Blossoming and nurturing a once little shack into a 53 year heritage is not an easy quest.
Tell us your story – how did you get here?
I was born and raised on the island of Bali – my mother is Balinese from Kuta, and my father is Dutch. I moved abroad for my education and lived in Australia for a total of seven years. This truly showed the stark contrast of lifestyles and cultures. I enjoyed the diversity of experiencing two very different styles of living, although I yearned for Bali and missed it greatly. Living abroad didn’t change the fact that Bali was always home.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
The expansion of my family legacy has always been one of my main goals; growing and sharing the recipes and food that have been in my family for over 50 years. Starting in Bali in 1969, we have now successfully expanded to Jakarta and The Netherlands.
Another big accomplishment of mine is having my two beautiful boys, watching them grow and learn is an achievement like no other.
What impact have you made in Bali?
My family was one of the first to have a small warung in Kuta 53 years ago. Slowly it became a popular place to hangout for locals and expats alike; a haven of great food and even better company. Expanding Made’s Warung and helping it flourish throughout the years has become one of my greatest accomplishments. Seeing how our food and the atmosphere at Made’s Warung brings people together has truly been rewarding.
What does 2022 look like for you?
Hopefully 2022 will be much better than the last two years. Slowly the island is getting back on its feet and tourists are coming in more and more. For Made’s Warung, we are in the process of opening another restaurant in Jakarta, but you will just have to wait for the grand opening!
What do you love most about Bali?
Honestly I can’t think of a better place to live. Maybe it’s because I was born here, which might make me a little biassed, but I think it all boils down to the charismatic people, tasty food and the rich culture and traditions. Living next to the beach doesn’t make it all too bad either, since I have a passion for surfing. Life here is simple but in a way that simple is best.
If you could choose your last ever meal, what would it be?
There’s only one right answer for this one: Nasi Campur from Made’s Warung!
Who is your Local Legend and why?
Growing up with the legacy that is Made’s Warung, it was so clear to me that it all truly came down to the blood, sweat and tears of my parents. They are the true Local Legends. Blossoming and nurturing a once little shack into a 53 year heritage is not an easy quest, but they persevered through it all with a love of food and the love they had for each other. Finally, becoming the man I am today, I am proud to be able to continue their story and touch more people with our food.
