This family-run café and homewares store is one of Canggu’s hidden gems, and is well worth a visit, not only for the wholesome food and organic coffee, but also for the homewares shopping.
Despite being open for over 15 months, Quince, a family-run cafe and homewares store in Berawa remains an undiscovered secret for many. Owners Michelle, Armen, and their son Priya, first opened this cosy boutique eatery slash lifestyle store after finally swapping the city for island life living in 2014.
If you’re lucky enough to have chanced upon this Canggu boutique/eatery before, you will be familiar with its relaxed and communal ambience. You can’t help but feel right at home in Quince’s eclectic and comfortable dining space, which is decorated with bold, concrete furnishings that are softened with batik cushions, table succulents and surrounding boxed gardens. Michelle, Armen, and their son Priya even greet you just like one of the family as they welcome you to their home(wares) and dining table(s).
Quince is truly a family affair – Armen leads the front-of-house after years of restaurant & cafe experience in Melbourne, while Michelle (wo)mans the kitchen. An early passion for food styling sparked Michelle’s culinary interest, proving that her creativity in the kitchen is no less than it is in the design department.
A quick read off the menu shows a range of dishes that sound deceptively simple, yet the thought in creating these dishes is not. Michelle is a natural who easily pulls off wholesome, imaginative and well thought out ingredient combinations that will have you returning, just like most of their clientele who have traded in their home bench for the Quince tables for breakfast, lunch and the dinner takeaways.
Some of Michelle’s personal faves include, for breakfast, their Overnight Oats (dipped in coconut milk and topped with raspberries warmed in agave nectar, pistachios, black sesame seeds, and mint) or their NEW Breakfast Bagel (toasted of course and topped with garlic oil, smashed boiled eggs in a parmesan custard with steamed seasonal greens and avocado with a pumpkin seed pesto). While at lunch, her go-tos are the Felafel (three colours quinoa with Felafel, asparagus, cucumber, spring onion, mixed greens and a pumpkin hummus dressing) and Green Wheat Freekah (with rocket, mint, corriander, red radish, spanish onion + pistachio nuts with broad beans + a dressing of pomegranate molasses, sumac + olive oil). YUM!
If you’re in need of a pick-me-up to combat the afternoon, grab an espresso – Quince uses FREAK organic coffee, a small boutique co-operative of farmers from the Kintamani region.
When Michelle isn’t busy in the kitchen, she’s unleashing her artistic flair on the MANY ideas she has for the store – Quince boasts it’s own brand, a ceramic collection designed and made here in Bali by local craftsmen. These sit alongside some more organic inspired hand thrown porcelain from the talents of multiple Australian artists. A must-have right now is the Black Hanging Planter, a hand dyed teak bowl with banana tree trunk fiber strings to hang from your ceiling. Additionally, there are gorgeous hand-sewn and printed textiles and fabrics by Michelle herself – find pillow cases, throws, and table napkins with all the fine details.
We’re suckers for ceramics and have a never-ending love affair with different and distinct home accessories, undoubtedly the reason why we ended up on the Quince doorstep. Quince houses the kind of pieces you will like or (as we do) LOVE and that you most certainly need in your city or island life abode.
Open Tuesday – Sunday, 8am-4pm for breakfast, lunch and take away.
