THE BEST NEW RESTAURANTS IN BALI THAT OPENED IN 2019
Penny Lane – Canggu
Officially the place to see and be seen right now, Penny Lane has opened in Canggu with an absolute bang. Jaw-dropping architecture, insanely swish vibes and a delish tapas and cocktail menu – this is one for the hitlist. With its breezy interiors dripping in alternative art, indoor palms and vintage chandeliers, it’s no surprise that Canggu’s finest flock here on the daily to feast on nibbly plates to share, supercharged schnitzels, big burgers and loaded fries. You’ll also find superfood salads, gourmet brekkies and some local dishes too. Try the stuffed peppers, the gold-friend calamari and the burrata cheese & hummus to start, and finish with The Infamous Poutine Burger or Chicken Parmigiana. And don’t forget those cocktails…
Penny Lane, Jl Munduk Catu, Canggu, p. +62 852 3877 7786, e. [email protected]. Open daily 8am – midnight.
Black Sand Brewery – Canggu
So, a man walks into a bar… and guess what? The rest ain’t no joke. A ‘Gu game-changer, Black Sand Brewery is changing the face of beer drinking in Bali – by bringing properly-brewed craft beer to the bar top. Inspired by beers from faraway lands, Black Sand Brewery slings its very own IPA, a cool and crisp German Kölsch brew, a Blonde Ale and even a Belgian Pale Ale. But that’s not all. With great beer must come epic food, so the kitchen here also sends out bistro-style bites to wash it all down. Designed to share, expect wholegrain pizzettas, quality meats, succulent seafood (hello miso-glazed prawns and black chilli mussels!) and plenty of tasty greens – all of this with rice field views and an easy breezy beer garden with a Balinese vibe. Not only a place to knock back quality beer, Black Sand Brewery is a community melting pot for like-minded beer enthusiasts, foodies and lovers of life.
Black Sand Brewery, Jl Batu Bolong, Canggu, p. +62 812 37542129, e. [email protected].
Café Del Mar – Canggu
While this so-hot-right-now beach club opened its Ibizan doors back in September, this month, Café Del Mar unveiled a sun-soaked Mediterranean fine dining restaurant beneath one if its iconic archways. Armed with a team of international culinary talent and alllll the white-and-blue sleek interiors you’d expect from this Ibiza-born brand, this restaurant is all about casual dining in an oh-so relaxed environment. As for the menu, expect new coastal Mediterranean and neo-Middle Eastern cuisine, made with the finest and freshest ingredients around. It’s playful, seasonally inspired, and in true European style, it’s designed to swap, share and sample over multiple hours and glasses of vino.
Café Del Mar, Jl Subak Sari, Canggu, p. +62 361 4471625. Open daily from 11am.
555 Thai – Canggu
Before we even mention the food at this epic new Canggu restaurant, can we just talk about that name for a minute? While it may look like an ad to some dodgy takeaway (“Call 5-5-5-T-H-A-I for delivery!”) the name actually refers to the way the Thai write “hahaha” in text speak – AKA, the Thai version of “LOL”. So what’s that got to do with a zesty Pad Thai, we hear you cry? Good times, good moods and good food from The Land of Smiles, that’s what. So, expect authentic and home-style Thai classic here that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear, like the signature Massaman curry, the spicy Tom Yum or the quintessential mango sticky rice for dessert – plus Thai-inspired cocktails to really have you roaring. All of this is then served up in crazy and kitsch Bangkok-style interiors (hellooooo leopard print seating!) and a floor that’s made out of ninety thousand bottle caps – OMG! And psst! If you’re still not convinced, this new joint is from the same peeps who gave us One Eyed Jack, La Finca and Ink, so it’s guaranteed to be a good’un. We love you long Thai, 555!
555 Thai, Jl Raya Semat, Canggu, p. +62 878 8778 7555, e. [email protected]. Open daily 5pm – 10.30pm.
Izakaya by OKU – Nusa Dua
When The Apurva Kempinski first opened its doors in Nusa Dua earlier this year, they dangled a few gourmet carrots to keep us on our hungry toes: the promise of multiple and exceptional restaurants opening throughout the year. Well, Izakaya by OKU is one of those carrots, and boy, it has not disappointed. An outpost of the award-winning OKU Japanese Restaurant in Jakarta, Izakaya by OKU brings all of the flagship’s finest creations to the island, this time served up in a dynamic and casual atmosphere that reinvents a typical izakaya. With its bistro-chic setting and fab open-kitchen taking centre stage, feast on Aburi Salmon Rolls, Teriyaki Chicken and truffled Gyūdon. Or, for a super spesh experience, go for the Chef’s five- or seven-course “Okukase” degustation menu.
Izakaya by OKU at The Apurva Kempinski, Jl Raya Nusa Dua Selatan, Sawangan, Nusa Dua, p. +62 361 209 2288, e. [email protected]. Open daily 6pm – 10.30pm.
Honey Kitchen – Pererenan
Not only do we love the name of this breezy new cafe in peaceful Pererenan, we’re also obsessed with the fresh fit-out. Laced in white and studded with gold and black accents, Honey Kitchen is simple but oh-so stylish. And of course, the same can be said about the menu. With a focus on ultra-fresh and organic ingredients, local and imported produce is given the Midas touch, creating standout brunch plates like the salmon and quinoa bowl, the coconut hot cakes, and the out-of-the-box sides like charred eggplant with pomegranate and a honey tahini. And FYI, their sweet potato fries are the best we’ve ever tasted…
Honey Kitchen, Jl Pantai Pererenan No. 132, e. [email protected]. Open daily from 8am – 5pm.
Gooseberry Cafe & Boutique – Bingin
From the same babes who gave us Bali’s internationally-acclaimed lingerie & swimwear label, Gooseberry Intimates, the brand new Gooseberry Cafe & Boutique is as gorgeous as Isabelle Mathers in the new 2019 swim collection. Tucked away above Bingin Beach, the cafe is a tropical oasis of modern brunch cuisine, air-conditioned interiors and a sun-soaked pool for a post-brunch dip. Graze guilt-free on the cafe’s vegan and vegetarian options (hellooo smashed avo) or forget about the bikini bod and go all out with the French Toast, creamy burrata, or even the grilled pork Banh Mi burger…
Gooseberry Cafe & Boutique, Jl Buana Sari, Gg Melali, Bingin – Uluwatu, p. +62 821 4482 3166, e. [email protected]. Open daily 7am – 6pm.
Kyoka Japanese Kitchen – Ubud
If, like us, you regularly find yourself at IBU SUSU in Ubud, then get ready to add another name to your major-love list. Kyoka Japanese Kitchen is the newest destination from the IBU SUSU team, this time dishing up modern, Kyoto favourites and home-style comfort food. Think sticky chicken yakitori, crunchy tempura, and ocean-fresh sashimi, or the signature Nabeyaki Udon & Soba Noodle salad with a sesame dressing. And with family connections to Japan for over 40 years, you can expect plenty of nods to Japanese art and culture here, from the antique and vintage Japanese interiors, to the artisanal ceramics that the food is served in. And to really transport you to the bars and buzz of Kyoto, the cocktail list, sake and Japanese whiskey selection is just as sensational. Kanpai!

KLYF Club – Nusa Ceningan
Just when we thought our weekend getaways couldn’t get any more glamorous, KLYF Club on Nusa Ceningan swung open its spectacular clifftop doors. Perched directly above a kaleidoscope of cobalt overlooking the Blue Lagoon on the untouched island of Nusa Ceningan (the little sister to Nusa Lembongan, accessible by that ever-Instagrammable yellow bridge) KLYF has officially taken the island’s cliff club scene to a whole other level (literally). With a stunning infinity pool, sophisticated daybeds, a DJ booth and a world class bar and restaurant, you’ll want to settle in for a serious feast here. Bringing refined, modern-Asian and Mediterranean cuisine to the clifftops, the menu has been curated by Chef Kieran Morland of Merah Putih and Sangsaka in Bali, and he’s all about using light, clean and freshly prepared local ingredients to perfectly compliment the stunning ocean views.
KLYF Club at Blue Lagoon Avia Villas, Jl Sarang Burung, Nusa Ceningan. Open daily.
Alma Tapas Bar – Berawa
A neighbourhood tapas bar on the hip Berawa strip, Alma is described as a place to eat together, drink together and let time stand still. It’s where you can graze for hours on heart-warming shared plates and creative libations, whether it’s a wine, Sangria, artisan cocktail, infused gin & tonic, or in true Spanish style, a Vermouth on the rocks. Start with the cured and pickled nibbles, then move onto the morsels of seafood, meat and veggies, like the grilled chorizo with roasted apple and onion, or the succulent pork belly with a garlicky Canarian Mojo Picon sauce. Our fave? Try the Suquet de Pescado y Mariscos for some serious Spanish flavours, AKA, a tomato-based seafood stew with snapper, prawns, squid, clams and octopus. YUM.
Alma Tapas Bar, Jl Pantai Berawa No.c89, Canggu, p. +62 819 99105 888, e. [email protected]. Open daily 5pm – 10pm.

Star chef Steven Skelly and drinks guru Nicolas Lento have created this sophisticated and design-savvy 70-seater ‘casual fine diner’, with eclectic artwork lining the walls and an amalgamation of Asian inspiration and contemporary techniques on the menu. Expect locally sourced seafood and vegetables served with Japanese and French influences, like savoury doughnuts with brandade and beetroot, decadent crab lasagna with soft herbs and a ginger emulsion, and even char sui lobster buns. Well, Caravan is Seminyak’s newest all-day brunch restaurant that lets us feast on all of our morning faves from dawn until mid-arvo – and our egg-loving appetites couldn’t be happier. All of those all-important brunch staples have made it to the menu, like smashed avo on toast, tropical chia pudding and even a tomato frittata – and the best bit is, this new dining destination is from the Sea Circus crew, so you know you’re in the best brunching hands here. And psst – soon to come is an Asian menu to take you through to lunch and dinner, and once you’ve finished feasting on Caravan’s creations, you can shop more than 50 designer brands at the onsite boutique too – with a cocktail in hand, naturally. Eat, drink and shop? Yes puh-lease.

Samik Eating House & Bar – Seminyak
Samik Eating House & Bar is best described as merging a modern Australian vibe with influences from the Middle and Far East. Yet when it comes to the produce? The focus is on locally-sourced ingredients that let the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean accents truly shine. And fear not – this isn’t another fussy food concept with a menu that requires a dictionary. Instead, the food is unpretentious and approachable, with a daily display of salads and bakes too. Try the sweet potato gnocchi with harissa butter, labneh and spiced macadamia, and whatever you do, don’t miss the salt and pepper prawns with a black lime mayo for dipping. Delish.

A brand new concept that’s all about clean and fresh food, Fika is an uber-stylish, modern and minimalistic cafe with a chef-driven menu, focusing on fresh ingredients with no need for excessive garnishes. Well, the same could be said for the interiors. The smart and precisely-lit design reflects the simple menu; modest and functional, with all of your fave local and international cafe creations from the legendary Executive Chef Jethro Vincent. Think gourmet toasts from Europe to spicy salads from Thailand, and banoffee pancakes from Bali. And it goes without saying that the avo on sourdough here is one of the best around (it comes slathered with a lemon-scented ricotta… YUM!).
Fika, Jl Raya Petitenget No.77X, Seminyak, p. +62 361 8974007, e. [email protected]. Open daily 7am – 10pm.

And the kicker? The ingredients used are freshly harvested and grown earth-to-table on the restaurant’s very own organic farm, paired with locally-sourced meat and seafood and a fabulous drinks list. Expect freshly barbecued seafood flavoured by local spices, alongside plenty of ingredients from both near and far from across the archipelago. Boheme is sooo much more than just another dining venue – it’s already become a social hub where people can connect over good food, creative drinks and flowing conversation, all in a comfy atmo of mismatched table settings, hanging sofas, high-back rattan chairs and poolside cabanas. Bali Bowls & Smoothies – Pererenan
Bowls, bowls and more bowls! We already love the original Bali Bowls & Smoothies in Berawa for its brekkie bowls, Buddha bowls, salad bowls and poke bowls, and now, we have one more reason to go bowl-istic over this nutritious and delicious Canggu legend: a brand new location in sleepy Pererenan. Bringing all of our faves to this quiet little village on the outskirts of the ‘Gu, expect allllll the crater-sized signatures here, like the Plantation Bowl with eggplant, avocado, quinoa, and kale, and our fave, the Mahi-Mahi Poke Bowl with mango, papaya, and cayenne – yum!

Remix Juice, Jl Pantai Pererenan No, 78, Pererenan, e. [email protected]. Open daily 8.30am – 4.30pm.
Opeum Bistro – Legian
Opeum has only just opened on the Double Six strip, and we’re already addicted. Helmed by MasterChef Singapore finalist, Sharon Gonzago, this new bistro is dedicated to preserving lost recipes from near and far, using fresh local ingredients that Chef Gonzago herself has sourced by exploring Bali’s terraces on a bike and scouring local markets. The results? Contemporary interpretations of heritage cuisine, like the Grilled Sambal Bajak Prawns, the Nasi Goreng Embe, and our fave, the Pesan Be Pasih – grilled silver snapper wrapped in banana leaves and powerfully flavoured by a Balinese sambal. All of this hidden beneath a luscious canopy of trees in a peaceful “secret garden” courtyard…
Opeum Bistro at Lloyd’s Inn Bali, Jl Arjuna (Double Six), Seminyak, p. +62 361 934 6969, e. [email protected]. Open daily 12pm – 11pm.
Ona Eatery – Canggu
Ona Eatery is Canggu’s first ever Provencal-influenced restaurant, and if you ask us, it’s also one of the prettiest. You see, unlike Canggu’s typical gaggle of compact cafes on Batu Bolong or the bustling Berawa strip, Ona Eatery sits on the peaceful outskirts of Canggu with a sprawling expanse of spectacular architecture, its very own vegetable garden, an open-air dining area and even a glorious rooftop that’s just begging for sultry sundowners. But that’s not all. By day, Ona Eatery is a totally casual spot to graze the day away on brunch staples in the sunshine (helloooo Smashed Avo) but by night, Ona Eatery transforms into an enchanting, low-lit setting with a broody atmo and ultra-chill tunes – topped off by specialty cocktails, fine wines, draft and imported beers, and a menu of date-night must-trys. Go for the Burrata & Prosciutto to start, followed by the Clam Linguine and Textures of Passionfruit to finish. YUM!

The Pontiac Stardust – Seminyak
Described as a cosmic road trip through 1950s/60s Palm Springs, The Pontiac Stardust is a progressive cocktail bar inspired by the art and energy of mid-century modern Palm Springs. A culture not a concept, this wild and wonderful new bar is helmed by award-winning bartender, Beckaly Franks – the first female mixologist to win the prestigious 42 Below Cocktail World Cup, and owner of the multi award-winning Pontiac in Hong Kong. It goes without saying then, that the cocktails here are second to none (try the P.O.G. Daiquiri or the Snake in the Grass if you don’t believe us) and the bar food is equally as epic. Inspired by food truck fare from California, Miami, Seattle and New York, expect to see a big Burger, the kielbasa sausage Dog, the Personal Pizza and Fries, loaded with Sriracha mayonnaise and parmesan. And did we mention, there’s also a vintage photo booth here, a transcendent soundtrack of desert rock meets upbeat bpm, and even a fairy-lit Teepee under the stars on the patio where the occasional reiki and tarot reading takes place. Welcome to The Pontiac Stardust.
The Pontiac Stardust, Jl Taman Ganesha No.9, Petitenget, Seminyak, p. +62 361 4471192, e. [email protected]. Open daily 4.30pm – 2am.

It’s a hip yet approachable day-to-night venue with something for everyone.

Nagisa is the newest drinking and dining hotspot in Nusa Dua, helmed by Head Japanese Chef, Katsumi Goda, who has 44 years of experience spanning 7 different countries under his hat. And to add to the authenticity, the restaurant observes “omotenashi” – the Japanese principle of sincere and wholehearted service. The highlights? Try the Robatayaki, the Teppanyaki and the sushi rolls, all best enjoyed with the carefully curated selection of sake, shochu, Japanese whisky and beer. Oishi!

HATCH – Uluwatu
Think that Uluwatu is only epic surf, pristine bays and bohemian stays? Think again. Brought to us by a bunch of colourful old hippies, Hatch has officially upped the Bukit’s drinking and dining scene with a restaurant-cum-wild-party spot that we’ve fallen head-over-flip-flops for. With its ramshackle-cool design and hopping party vibes, Hatch is on a mission to feed your soul with enormous platters and Mexican bites, before shaking things up with late-night dancing and the best music money can’t buy – all of this amidst the most psychedelic interiors around. Unsurprisingly so, Hatch has been bringing in the coolest crowds since day one of opening…

Warung Chickpea – Seminyak
An Ottolenghi-inspired Middle Eastern restaurant tucked away in the back streets of Seminyak, Warung Chickpea ain’t your typical Indonesian warung. For starters, this fresh, healthy and downright delicious lunch spot is helmed by Australian chef Nick Philips, and this kitchen genius uses local produce, spices and charcoal grilling to whip up a spread of dishes designed to pick and choose from Nasi Campur-style. You won’t find any rich Rendang or oily Nasi Goreng here however. Instead, expect light and zesty marinated pomelo, a chilli, cauliflower & chickpea salad, charred broccoli & lemon tahini, and Turkish-style lamb kofta with pomegranate molasses. You’ll want to arrive early too, as lunches starts at 11.30am and lasts only until everything is sold out…
Warung Chickpea, Jl Raya Seminyak, Gang Keraton No.6C (next to Bintang Supermarket), Seminyak. Open Tues – Sunday.
Brunch Club – Legian
If (like us) you’re a sucker for a great brunch, well, welcome to the club. Brunch Club in Legian is where fellow pancake and coffee connoisseurs can gather to graze on all-time brunch favourites: Melbourne-style eggs, fluffy waffles, fruity smoothie bowls and smashed avo, alongside lunch staples like big burgers, toasted sarnies, loaded salads and pizzas. To really make the most of this munching marathon, the restaurant is a large, two-floor building dressed in traditional Balinese temple brick, concealing a Melbourne-style café downstairs. Wall murals are as colourful as the cocktails they serve, while a full length, spray-cooled roof terrace features a separate pizza kitchen for all-day grazing. And because no brunch is complete without great coffee, at Brunch Club you’ll also find carefully selected blends that have been expertly roasted on the island, served exactly as you take it.

The Place With No Name – Uluwatu
Sure, this one’s gunna be hard to direct your taxi driver to, but trust us, it’s worth the challenge. The Place With No Name is Uluwatu’s newest modern and stylish destination for plant and fish-based food just footsteps from Padang Padang beach. The vegetarian and pescetarian plates here have been inspired by different locations around the world, from the Hawaiian Tuna Poke Bowl (including a veggie version), enormous Californian burritos with either Ahi, Shrimp or Tempeh (perfect for a post-surf refuel) served up with a secret sauce infused with both Mexican and Indonesian spices – yum! There’s also plenty of appetisers and small bites to nibble on, like truffle fries, spicy edamame, falafel and hummus. Look out for the cute botanical dining area out front if your taxi driver really is lost.

Ninetyone – Canggu
Destined to become one of Canggu’s hottest cocktail-fuelled dinner spots, Ninetyone is a brand new and modern casual dining restaurant inspired by the spices of The East. The food here is like nothing we’ve ever seen before in the ‘Gu – think Middle Eastern favourites seamlessly fused with modern cooking techniques, like spicy caramelised peach alongside a lightly charred halloumi, or honey-roasted baby carrots with Lebanese spices – best enjoyed he organic Lebanese Muscat wine (yes, you read that right!). All of this is then dished up family-style – designed to swap and share – within a beautifully converted villa space that makes you feel right at home. And did we mention, there’s plenty of vegan options here, too? Yup, we’re betting all of our Rupiah that Ninetyone is gunna be Canggu’s next big thang…

Coffee Cartel – Legian
With a name like Coffee Cartel, we knew these bean buffs meant serious business back when they opened in Seminyak in 2017. And now, after dominating Petitenget’s boutique cafe and coffee scene with their signature pink hues and cute potted cacti, these top dogs are opening a second location on the island, this time in Legian. Expect all of your fave Coffee Cartel staples here, like the top quality cappuccinos, the subtle Mexican aesthetics and the adorbs golden cutlery, not to mention the mean cafe menu of poke bowls, burgers, loaded fries and vegan smak hotcakes with candy floss, mixed berries and pink strawberry coco over custard. The Back Room at Mason – Canggu
Just when we thought the Mason crew couldn’t get any cooler, they open the doors to reveal this underground and obscenely suave bar and lounge space hidden at the back of the restaurant, complete with leather booths, low sofas and even lower lighting. Totally air-conditioned, The Back Room is a welcome reprieve from the balmy Bali air in Mason’s al fresco courtyard and dining area, making it the perfect spot to linger until late with a post-feast tipple or two (the Negronis here are the best around, FYI). Unsurprisingly so, this is the new spot to see and be seen, flocked by Canggu’s coolest crowds every night of the week.
The Back Room at Mason, Jl Batu Bolong No. 83, Canggu, e. [email protected]. Open nightly ‘til 2am.

Xich Lo – Canggu
Xich Lo was once one of our best kept secrets – our fave rice field warung on the outskirts of Kerobokan serving the most authentic Vietnamese food we’ve found in Bali. But now, the secret is officially out, ever since this second location popped up in Canggu. Still with epic emerald views and Vietnamese cuisine done right, Xich Lo in Canggu is where you’ll find authentic and aromatic Phở, Cơm Thit Nuong (grilled meat and rice) and our lunchtime go-to, Banh Mi (Vietnamese style baguettes). And with its open-air, breezy seating area scattered with natural and locally-sourced furniture, home-cooked Vietnamese food has never tasted so good… Top tip: swing by on the regular for weekly specials, art sessions and documentary screenings.

From the same people who gave us Sage in Ubud, Bella brings all of the same clean, vegan eats that we’ve come to love from the Sage original, yet this time the menu has taken an Italian turn. Expect pizza, pasta and everything Italian in between, made from fresh produce sourced from the Sage farm. All of the sauces, toppings, batters, breads and more have been made from scratch, and all of the pastas, cakes and donuts are gluten-free! Our faves? Try the coconut flour-crusted onion rings and the creamy Mac & Cheese – you’ll hardly believe these are vegan!

Avenue A – Berawa
Berawa is packed to the brim with Australian-style cafes and European cuisine, but one thing this hip little ‘hood has been missing is a good ol’ American gastropub. You won’t find any alfalfa sprouts here, nor any turmeric lattes or spirulina infusions. Instead, Avenue A is all about no-frills good food – a modern nostalgic menu that’s designed to curb your naughtier cravings. Think crispy house-cured pork belly, Wagyu beef sliders and lemongrass spiced calamari – dished up alongside craft cocktails, beers, and rock & roll vibes.

Billy Ho – Canggu
They say that three’s the magic number, but for Will Meyrick, Asia’s unstoppable Street Food Chef, why stop at three when you can dominate Bali’s food scene with an entire empire of Asian-inspired eateries? Well, this masterchef has just opened his sixth masterpiece on the island, joining foodie favourites Sarong, Mama San, Tiger Palm, Hujan Locale and SOM CHAI. This time breaking into Canggu, Billy Ho brings the comfort food of Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea to our dinner tables, with all the gourmet tricks we’ve come to know and love from Chef Will. You’ll want to begin with a banquet of starters (the tuna sashimi with smoked chilli ginger flower is our fave) before moving onto the roasted meats served with mandarin pancakes or steamed baos. But don’t stop there. The twice cooked short rib beef with tamarind and homemade shrimp paste glaze is a must for a main, as is the grilled red miso grouper served with pickled red cabbage, green chilli cashew nuts and white miso crustacean sauce. And going by previous performances propping up Will’s bar-tops, it goes without saying that the cocktails here are top-notch too. Alas, the Will Meyrick reign continues….
Billy Ho, Jl Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu, p. +62 81353 873 272, e. [email protected]. Open daily 5pm – midnight.

But back to that South American feast… the flavour of the menu is all about top quality traditional staples, like Frijoles Negros with an Avocado purèe; tuna & minced lobster taquitos; and gourmet tacos with Calamari deep-fried to a crisp. All of this is best paired with one of Rebenga’s sublime libations, like the Cartel Bees Knees with Bombay Sapphire, elderflower, agave, lime and an egg white froth.

Cactus Cafe – Pererenan
From the same peeps who gave us Canteen Cafe in Canggu (our hangover go-to and one of the first cafes on the Canggu block) Cactus Cafe has brought those epic scrambled eggs and brekkie staples to the quieter ‘hood of Pererenan. But unlike its edgy older sister, Cactus Cafe comes with a slightly healthier twist, and of course, a cute cactus concept that we can’t get enough of. The eggs are just as gooey and the bacon is just as crispy as you’ve come to expect from these guys – they’ve just been loaded with lashings of the good stuff like avocado, quinoa and turmeric chais on the side. For that healthy kick, try one of the fruity smoothie bowls, or for some Canteen-hangover nostalgia, go for the the cactus-shaped hash brown with scrambled eggs, a bean reduction, oh-so crispy bacon and a tomato chilli sambal.

Kinjo Kakigori – Seminyak
When a traditional Japanese food concept debuts in Bali, you can bet your Yen on the fact that it’s the work of the the unstoppable Kaminari Group – the same peeps who gave us Rayjin Teppanyaki, Dahana and Kajin in Seminyak, and Musubi in Canggu. Well, Kinjo Kakigori is no exception, and this cool container is now the first ever Kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) specialist on the island. Using pure ice blocks and a special ice-shaving machine direct from Japan, the kakigori here has that unique and traditional texture of freshly fallen snow. Chicken tikkas, curries, kormas and biryanis all still feature in a big way (and they’re as authentic as you’d hope), they’ve just been refined and tweaked to twenty-first century perfection. Well, finally it’s arrived, in the form of a quaint and cute coffee shop (with surf-shack-cool vibes) slinging a smooth blend of local Kintamani, Aceh Gayo and Toraja beans. The lattes here are the bee’s knees (available with soy, almond or coconut milk too) and there’s even a selection of cakes and sweets to help the cappuccinos go down. Try the double chocolate brownie (nice and crispy on the outside, but warm and sticky on the inside) or the apple crumble, drizzled with caramel sauce and best served with a double espresso.
Elephant in the Room, Jl Kartika Plaza No. 168, Kuta (next to Bali Dynasty Resort). Open daily 8am – 5pm.
KYND Creamery – Seminyak
It’s official – there’s nothing the KYND Community crew can’t do. First they redefined vegan cafe food with the opening of KYND in Seminyak, then they broke boundaries with their plant-based Indonesian tucker at GIVE in Canggu (all not-for-profit, FYI), and now, they’ve given us KYND Creamery – a dairy-free ice-cream parlour scooping out the most colourful, creative cones we’ve ever wrapped our mitts around. Vegan sprinkles, cruelty-free freak shakes – it’s all here, ready for the licking.
KYND Creamery, Jl Petitenget No.12 (next to KYND cafe), Seminyak, p. +62 859 3112 0209, e. [email protected]. Open daily 10am – 10pm.
Alternative Beach – Canggu
Few things lure us away from Bali’s breathtaking beaches, but when the alternative is a glittering swimming pool with pumping tunes, a glam sun deck, hopping pool bar, jacuzzi, tropical restaurant and even boutique accommodation – well, sometimes we make an exception. Yup, Alternative Beach in the heart of Canggu has managed to tempt us away from our sandy hangs to instead sip on poolside cocktails, graze on summery bites and people-watch the cool crowds and bikini babes. Come for the Pina Coladas, stay for the happy hours, and come back for wild rides down the water slide.
Alternative Beach, Jl Batu Bolong No.78, Canggu, p. +62 361 9069 622, e. [email protected]. Open daily 7am – 10pm.
Secret Penida – Nusa Penida
Just a hop, skip and a short boat ride away from mainland Bali, you’ll find Secret Penida – a hidden and healthy gem on the pristine shorelines of Nusa Penida, Bali’s paradisal sister island that’s making its way onto every traveller’s itinerary. Well, after we got a taste of the Secret Smashed Avocado, the fluffy Penida Pancakes and the oh-so Instagrammable chia seed jars, we just couldn’t keep this new cafe under wraps for much longer. And anyway, with its pinch-me-cute pink interiors, palm tree murals and towering cactus, you’ll struggle to miss this contemporary, delicious addition to the island.
Secret Penida, Jl Ped – Buyuk, Nusa Penida, p. +62 878 61478222. Open daily 7am – 6pm.
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas – Berawa
Food, drinks, beats, dancefloor – SVÁ Indonesian Tapas knows exactly how to get our attention. This brand new three-storey Berawa destination is a tapas bar with a difference, dishing up authentic yet upscale Indonesian food in bite-sized, share-style portions. By day, it’s a cool spot to kick back and graze the afternoon away, while by night, it transforms into a happening little hub with good music, great drinks, and of course, epic Indonesian bites across multiple levels.
SVA Indonesian Tapas, Jl Pantai Berawa, Gang Kedaton No. 5, Berawa, p. +628113930118. Open Mon – Thur 12pm – 10pm & Fri – Sun 12pm – 10.30pm.
Bottega Italiana Berawa – Berawa
A new address for the island’s Italians to get their fix of just-like-nonna’s nosh, Bottega Italiana has opened yet another set of doors in Bali – this time in Berawa. Now the fourth location on the island (joining its predecessors in Seminyak, Petitenget and central Canggu) you’ll find all of your fave Bottega Italiana signatures here, including the homemade pastas and sauces, those cheese and meat platters, and of course, Bottega’s farm-to-table, back-to-basics, from-scratch approach – the kind that Nonna herself would be proud of.
Bottega Italiana, Jl Pantai Berawa, e. [email protected]. Open daily 8am – 10pm.
Bokacika – Pererenan
Just minutes from the beach in the sleepy village of Pererenan, Bokacika is the first – and only – pool bar to open in this quiet and traditional village on the outskirts of Canggu. With the motto “float, feast, frolic”, Bokacika is exactly that – a place to dip, eat and hang out, all the while soaking up the best bits of Bali – rice field views included. Try the signature Beef Rendang tacos with cucumber and spiced cream, wrapped up in a crispy wonton. Washing it down with a cocktail isn’t mandatory, but highly recommended.
Bokacika, Jl Pantai Pererenan, p. +62 812 46941410, e. [email protected]. Open daily.
