From acoustic band sessions to low key left-of-centre clubs, here are five new bars in Bali to lube up your nightlife.
Lacalaca
Boost your street credentials with a flying visit to this hip as hell cantina mexicola where the beer is always ice cold and the custom cocktails are some of the most inventive on Bali. The passion behind good booze, good food and good times is evident as an endless parade of Seminyak fashionistas can be seen dipping in and out of this funky little palace every night of the week. Keep an eye out for the birth of little sis Lacalita coming soon somewhere in Canggu.
Lacalaca, Jalan Drupadi 1, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia, p. +62 361 2032323, e. [email protected]. Open Mon-Sun 7.30am-midnight.
Rooftop@DoubleSix
Brand spanking new mega rooftop bar with open air cinema and theme parties happening nightly, this could all have gone completely Kuta – but instead we’ve got a bona fide world class watering hole atop one of Seminyak’s most iconic new residences. Expect tiki-inspired cocktails and glam fire-breathing models gracing the premises as you take in the nightly sunset ritual at what will soon become one of the best places to hang at dusk. If you’re feeling peckish, there’s a BBQ pit up there too or just wander downstairs to the fantastic Italian. This joint scores points with us for the view and its audacious rooftop scope.
Rooftop@DoubleSix, Jalan Pantai Double Six 66, Seminyak, Bali 80361, Indonesia, p. +62 361 730 466, e. [email protected].
Jealous Lovers
An uber hip little pop up bar on Gang 14 just opposite Ryoshi Japanese. Blink and you’ll miss it but find it successfully and you’ll be knocking back night time tequilas and icey cold Coronas with the cool Bali set in next to no time. There’s always some fab music happening, whether it’s resident DJs or acoustic band sessions, and the intimacy of the space means you’re guaranteed to meet some interesting characters away from the main drag and impersonal beachside spots with big names. Save a special hello for the super nice owners who are rapidly turning this little alleyway into a mini Melbourne scene all of their own. Edgy and cool.
Jealous Lovers, Jalan Raya Seminyak Gang 14, Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia, p. +62 859 3507 3565, e. [email protected]. Open Mon-Sun 4pm-1am.
Warehouse 82
Forget about the rest of the mainstream bars and clubs on the island, this place is the epicenter of the Bali underground club scene and for good reason. Think NYC style art installation space by day that morphs into a low key left of centre club after dark. Art student types, skinny jeans and emaciated models lurk in the corners of the club whilst resident and visiting DJs spin anything from Twitch Hop to Grime to Garage and back again. Visiting turntable royalty from the Low End Theory in San Fran have made this their Southeast Asia HQ so keep an eye on their party plans every month. Dress code is sneakers and torn tees all the way.
Warehouse 82, Jalan Mertanadi, Seminyak, Bali 80361, Indonesia p. +62 361 735 223, e. [email protected].
Alibi@Upashaa
This makes the list because of the fact it’s a street level New York style bar done right in a cosy little space that is perfect for small gatherings before you head down the road to Townhouse, if you must, to keep the vibe going into the wee smalls. Excellent wine list and designer cocktails are on hand here at Alibi, with tapas bar nibbles and a rotating line up of resident DJs plus special guest Jazz and Classical musicians dropping in on occasion for chill out nights. Very Manhattan chic.
Alibi@Upashaa, Jalan Laksmana 77, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia, p. +62 361 8465 977, e. [email protected]. Open 1130am-1230am.
