Get to know the Australian TV host and fashion blogger in our exclusive one-on-one interview
Everyone, meet our new girl crush! TV personality by day, rising Instagram star by moonlight, there are the many reasons why we’re loving Yvette King: her striking Pan-Asian looks, covetable style, and a down-to-earth personality that’s charming both onscreen and off.
We should know. We experienced it first hand when we met Yvette (and her adorable pup) one fine afternoon for a girlie chat, where she spilled the deets on everything: her style secrets, top tips for conquering the Instagram scene, and what it was like being Posh Spice for a day – sorta.
Hi Yvette! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My mother is Korean and my dad is a true blue Aussie. So I grew up in Sydney a little culturally confused, having Vegemite on toast for breakfast and kimchi for dinner. When I was young, I wanted to be ang moh but now I want to be Asian – more issues than Vogue, I tell you!
From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a TV anchor or journalist and nothing else, which is a relief considering I’m indecisive about pretty much everything else. I studied Media and Communications at Sydney University, where I made some of my happiest memories – especially since that was when I fell in love with a boy who is now stuck with me! I also spent a gap year travelling the world, before eventually moving to Singapore. One of the best decisions of my life!
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Determined, a dreamer, and a lover.
What’s one little known fact about yourself?
I can make a 3-leaf clover with my tongue!
How would you describe your style?
Relaxed, casual, simple, and wannabe French. If you want to see it for yourself, head over to my blog: www.yvetteking.com
Gotta say, we’re totally diggin’ it! Who inspires you?
Some of my favourites on Instagram to get inspo are The Haute Pursuit, Margaret Zhang, and Sydney Fashion Blogger for their signature styles and the way they curate their instagram feeds. Fashion blogs are also fantastic to see what personal style is like all over the world. Tuula.com and 4th and bleeker are my picks: they’re effortlessly cool but their fashion sense is accessible. But my style muse will always be Kate Moss or Sienna Miller in the movie Alfie.
You’ve got over 10,000 followers on Instagram (@vettyking). What’s your secret to a strong following?
I wish I knew! With mine, I try to take high quality images and keep the content consistent.
What are your top tips for taking great photos?
A great lens: you can have an amazing camera body but without the right lens, you won’t be able to get that depth of field. Good lighting is also so important. I love taking images as the sun is going down. Most of the time, I am really just pointing and shooting, hoping for the best!
What are the highlights of your career so far?
I would have to say getting to meet David Beckham and being Posh for a day (kinda, sorta) as well hosting a Damiani black tie dinner with Sophia Loren – it was one of those ‘what just happened?’ moments. I’ll also never forget my first live show. I’m always so grateful as it has often been a testing journey to get here – to a place where I get to interview David Beckham!
What’s next on your bucket list?
I’d love to spend more time in Europe and go on a sabbatical in Tuscany, making coffees and reading books – pretty much the storyline from Under the Tuscan Sun minus the heartache! I also want to own a home by the ocean, learn a language, and work with animals.
What are your top vacation spots?
The beaches in Thailand and Mykonos, Saint Germain in Paris, and Tuscany. I love cafes and beaches, obviously!
What are your favourite places in Singapore to…
Shop:
I think Singapore lacks more gorgeous little boutiques where you can peruse through but I do love the online shopping here. I like to snap up pre-loved designer items on Reebonz and I’m currently obsessed with local label Eight Slate.
Eat/drink:
I know it sounds very douchebag-y but I’m a huge fan of fusion places like Chop Suey, Ding Dong, and Potato Head Folk. Maybe it’s the pan-Asian in me that wants to enjoy both worlds when I’m eating.
Chill out:
Tanjong Beach Club on a Saturday morning for swimming and paddle boarding with my dog Kingsley – it’s the best way to start the weekend.
Ok, one last question: what’s next for Yvette King?
I’m always re-evaluating things in the search of happiness. So I’m aiming for a bit more balance, a bit more travel, and more pug cuddles.
Thanks, Yvette! In the meantime, we’ll keep stalking you via your blog and on Instagram.
