From fancy hotel bars to hidden speakeasies, these local cocktail bars lead the way as some of the best bars in Asia... no, make that the world
The results are in… and it’s time to get
There’s no disputing Singapore as a country obsessed with cocktail bars, and if you often go bouncing around the nooks and crannies of our city, you should already know that we’ve got some of the best in the world. That’s no overstated proclamation, of course; Singapore has always been on the radar of the renowned World’s 50 Best Bars list, compiled annually by Drinks International. And revealed just last night in the official awards ceremony in London, it seems that we not only have one cocktail bar on the lauded list, but three.
Leading Singapore’s cocktail ambassadors is none other than Manhattan Bar, the ritzy, 1920s-inspired hotel bar at Regent, that sits at a cushy #11. One of the highest jumpers on the list (up 24 spots), Manhattan also trumps the competition by being the highest-placed bar from Asia (it also bagged the Bols Genever Best Bar In Asia accolade).
Trailing closely behind at #14 is sleek speakeasy and crowd favourite, 28 Hong Kong Street – if you remember, this bar also clinched the top spot in the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list announced earlier this year. This cocktail den is also the second highest-placed bar from Asia. And the third representative from Singapore, not far behind at #21, is yet another hidden bar, Ann Siang Hill’s Operation Dagger. Something tells us that both these clandestine hideouts won’t be so obscure after these crowning achievements!
Singapore, in fact, has the most number of cocktail bars on the list from Asia, even beating the trendy (and tipple-savvy) Hong Kong with just two entries – Lobster Bar at #27, and Quinary at #41. Who knows? Come next year, our lil’ red dot might just have what it takes to topple New York’s The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog – this year’s victor at #1 – off the summit. Fingers crossed, and stay thirsty!
