Not just your ordinary art supply store, Pigment in Tokyo, Japan, is a hidden artistic gem that's sight for sore eyes
Is there anything that Japan doesn’t do amazingly well? We’re no stranger to the country’s cooler-than-thou dining, fashion, and architectural concepts but wait till you see PIGMENT Tokyo.
Touted as a “traditional art supply lab”, PIGMENT in the Shinagawa ward boasts a mind-boggling range of materials that includes 4,200 colour pigments, over 200 types of antique ink sticks, and 50 kinds of animal glues. And it doesn’t stop there: it also carries a variety of tools and accessories like brushes, washi paper, canvases and fabrics, panels, wooden frames and more.
The store is a sight to behold, too. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the space features walls that are decorated with thousands of the colour pigments available, while the ceiling appears to look like a wooden wave, undulating at various angles.
