Get ready to welcome the successor to the most famous Orangutan in Southeast Asia with a fun run in February 2016
A beloved Singaporean icon and the only non-human recipient of Singapore’s Special Tourism Ambassador award, Ah Meng is a famed Orangutan that has led quite the storied life at the Singapore Zoo. She’s charmed us with her big heart and rather Singaporean penchant for durians. And she even hobnobbed with the likes of the late Michael Jackson, at a pool party at the Raffles Hotel, no less.
Since her passing in 2008, the Singapore Zoo has lacked a mascot of equal charms, so you’ll be delighted to hear that the zoo has officially picked a successor. From what we’ve heard so far, we know that this new Ah Meng shares her predecessor’s fondness for durians, as well as her loving personality.
Want to be the first to know more about the Singapore Zoo’s new animal icon? More of her details will be revealed at the upcoming Safari Zoo Run during the weekend of 27 and 28 February. Competitive runners can look forward to the 10km and 5.5km races, while those who’d rather take in the scenery and enjoy the animal exhibits can sign up for the 5.5km and 2.5km fun runs. The run aims to bring together fitness buffs and nature lovers while raising awareness for wildlife conservation. The best part? Part of the proceeds go towards conservations efforts. So put on those running shoes and take a walk (or run) on the wild side, and perhaps you’ll even get a chance to high-five the Zoo’s newest celebrity.
