Historical precincts, Singaporean families, personal stories about struggle and love, and stranger’s homes – it all comes together in this unique highlight at SIFA 2017
The Singapore International Festival of the Arts (SIFA) 2017 is all about opening doors, literally.
Part of SIFA’s programme this year is Open Homes, where over 30 families and individuals open their doors to the public. Visitors will now get the opportunity to explore the lives of others living in Singapore, through the stories they tell in their homes.
From families who live in classic black and white terraces to families who have come together from different circumstances, these stories will give you an enlightening glimpse into the real Singapore, beneath the smokescreen of glitzy city life. Here are five homes you must visit.
Food Sorcerer
You’ll be venturing to Rukhsana Vasanwala’s home in the East, where she runs one of Singapore’s most famous cooking schools from her humble abode. Listen to her story of her culinary journey, and don’t forget to give one of her nine cats a pat!
Something Old, Something New
What is it like living in bustling Geylang Serai? Nurhana Jamaludin and Hanifah Othman are a mother-daughter combo who live in a beautifully renovated flat in the iconic quarters. Han (daughter) loves all things old, and her mother, Hani, has many stories of past adventures when she was in the entertainment biz.
Zullette’s Yarn
Divorce is not always easy to talk about, but the Zullette family will welcome you into their home while their heartwarming stories about the fabric of life. “Happiness is not a fixed destination” – that’s the takeway they want you to have.
The Art and Science of Homemaking
Visit the home of two biologists, Isabelle and Suresh, where art, science and nature form the backdrop of their family. Check out Isabelle’s art studio in this black and white terrace in Commonwealth, where Suresh will also give a short biology lecture and play a Spanish guitar piece in the garden. Lovely.
Mummy Not At Home
This heartwarming session brings you to the home of Danny, his Peranakan mother who has dementia, and their dog in Ang Mo Kio. Filled with artwork and fond memories they have created over the years, Danny will be relating his journey of caring for his mother who has dementia.
