REVIEW: We’re SO excited here at Honeycombers HQ, you can not imagine. We got our hands on the very new, very cool, very awesome new iPhoneX today! Yes, face recognition scared me a bit, but it’s way easier to use than you would think … watch our video to see how to use it and to discover the functions we love
The new iPhoneX is Apple’s new generation of mobile phones. It’s technically smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus and larger than the iPhone 8, but the edge-to-edge screen actually makes it feel as large as the Plus and the size makes it easier to hold and use for those of us with tiny hands.
You can get all the detailed technical information about the new iPhoneX from the Apple website, of course, so in the video below we’re just running through some of the highlights we noticed immediately in comparison to the iPhone 8 Plus that I’ve been using for the last month or so.
iPhoneX face recognition is cool and easy to use
Registering for the face recognition software is amazingly easy. All you need to do is just turn your face in a circle twice! Yes, it’s totally that easy. I admit that I wasn’t a fan of using a passcode or thumbprint previously to lock my phone as I always seem to need to use it immediately, so using another form of access did worry me a bit. However, as you can see below, it’s really, really simple. You just need to have the front-facing camera towards your face and your iPhoneX unlocks immediately.
POST-SCRIPT: The Apple team explained to me that the face recognition software and cameras will ‘update’ itself to changes in your face so that you can still login. The fact that your face can change – like a man growing a beard – was taken into account apparently, and this is why you need to have passcode as well, so that when your face changes, you can still get into your iPhoneX.
I didn’t really think about this for myself until I realised that I couldn’t unlock my iPhoneX when my bangs were down. I’d registered my face without bangs, so the software needed to ‘update’ my look. Then it happened again when I tried to open my phone wearing sunglasses; and again wearing a different pair of sunglasses, this time with mirrored lenses. Each time I just used my passcode and the software took into account my changed appearance. So, there you go. The iPhoneX face recognition software really DOES seem to ‘learn’ your face.
Better image clarity and colours on the iPhoneX camera
The other thing that I noticed immediately is that the colours and details of your images and your videos are much clearer, even than the iPhone 8 Plus which had already improved the camera function. At 10x zoom on the iPhoneX you can see a great deal more detail and you can also see that the images are not as pixellated as previously. It may not be a perfect macro lens yet, but for a digital zoom function it’s pretty good.
You can also now use Portrait mode for selfies! Yes, you can make yourself easily stylish and mysterious without the help of a bunch of filters and apps.
You will LOVE the Animojis
Check out the video … We tried to add in one of the very, very fun Animojis that you can now get via iMessage on the new iPhoneX … there are 12 different characters that you can now send to your friends that will have your voice and your facial actions. OK, we’re not entirely sure what we’re going to use them for, but they’re super fun. You can send one to yourself and then download it onto your phone as a video clip, which you can then upload to your various social media platforms. I’m expecting to see so many talking aliens (my favourite one), unicorns and and Poos.
Check out the video below … we’re going to be trying a whole lot more of the cool functions on the new iPhoneX once we work out how to do it.
