Dust off your walking shoes, for you'll soon find community spaces and pop-up events along Singapore's most iconic railway track
If you’re looking for a little respite from urban living, take note! New York’s revolutionary High Line, an artificial park built on a derelict section of elevated railway tracks, has inspired a similar venture in Singapore, only one that’s ten times longer! Singapore’s take on this unique park system will utilise the green spaces along the tracks to build a chain of interconnected parks along the 24km-long Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway line.
The railway, originally commissioned by the British, fell into disuse and lay abandoned since 2011. But when this drastic makeover is completed, Singaporeans will enjoy a 24km stretch of lush greenery with community spaces and pop-up events to boot. The trail will include activity hubs for yoga, rock climbing and even a space for urban farming. And naturally, it’s environmentally-friendly! After all, it was designed by green-conscious Japanese architectural firm, Nikken Sekkei, in collaboration with Tierra Design and Arup Singapore.
Want a sneak peak? Get your trek on at the Green Corridor trail that already runs along the KTM line in the Bukit Timah area. Just remember to wear good shoes and prepare to get a little muddy, the paths here are a fair bit more rugged than other walking trails in Singapore. Good luck!
