Just as we thought the Japanese dining scene in Singapore couldn’t be more stellar, here comes a new restaurant that blows (and literally so!) everyone out of the water. Fine dining establishment Fuku is now open, and it’s the first restaurant in Asia outside of Japan to serve – wait for it – fugu, otherwise known as puffer fish.
The potentially fatal delicacy, which is reportedly hundred times more poisonous than cyanide, is dished up various ways (sashimi, hotpot, deep-fried, etc) in kaiseki style, a traditional multi-course set dinner. Quell your worries: Fuku’s chefs are certified practitioners with more than 20 years of experience, and the fish are thoroughly cleaned, and approved by the relevant authorities before they are imported into Singapore.
Its threat of death aside, what also makes fugu so alluring is the health benefits it brings, being high in protein, low in fat and rich in collagen. A six-course dinner at Fuku restaurant starts from $150 per person, and a nine-course set will set you back $580, with a five-day advance booking.
Want to start small? The restaurant offers a la carte items like the fugu milt and the fugu steamed egg. If you’re dragged to Fuku by an adventurous eater and not ready to try the infamous fish just yet, there are non-fugu items on the menu like grilled king crab, grilled red snapper, and a beef shabu-shabu course.
Fuku, #01-01, 14 Mohamed Sultan Road, Singapore 238963, p. 6235 8216. Open daily 6pm-11pm.
