TGIF already brought you the news that Erwin’s has opened a second outlet offering a weekend brunch menu, so we put the gastrobar to the ultimate litmus test of weekend family dining.
Inspired by metropolitan cafes and bars of Italian origin found in the financial districts of cities such as New York and London, the diner cum gastrobar concept works surprisingly well in the residential district of River Valley. The signature boozy bites and sweet treats are still on offer here but on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am – 5pm you can now enjoy weekend brunch, including a selection of ciabatta brekky rolls, toasties and burgers, amongst other breakfast favourites.
With or without the kids, kick off the morning with their mean Bloody Mary to help recover from weekend revelries. We did – and it really did help matters, along with the Shirley Temples and wall-mounted screens running replays of BPL.
Classic beef burgers all round meant we had a quorum and could trust the outcome of the vote. Made with the finest gourmet beef, served with black pepper cheddar and ‘slaw, these mighty gob-stoppers were almost as big as our five year-old who somehow still managed to put it away in record time. There was not a lot of conversation, until the last bits of ketchup-y slaw were being wiped off mouths by sleeves. The vote was in and the kids gave it the thumbs up and a ten!
We rated the classic burger and will return to try the Falafel sandwich with hummus, eggplant fingers, beetroot and rocket which sounds equally delicious and gives the veggos a great option.
If this is what you’re after on a weekend, Erwin’s does it extremely well. It really brings a welcome new vibe to Valley Point. The timber, feature walls and tall columns do kind of transport you. The heartwarming food and friendly staff make you think you could be in an episode of Cheers.
Add it to your roster of Sunday dining options – or a sneaky pint on the way home from work.
