Friendship, National Service and being abroad for long make good material for national day songs - as proven by these childhood friends who’ve won the hearts of Singaporeans
When three friends in their 30s got together to collaborate, they ended up composing a heartfelt and emotional number that resonated with the public. Insisting that it was not a response to the current National Day theme song (which received mixed responses), but just a passion project between three childhood friends, Timothy Kua, Peter Huang and Bryan Tan, who shared the same experiences growing up, expressed their love for Singapore in a song.

Called “My Little Red Dot”, it’s written from the perspective of someone who left Singapore to live abroad for a while, while still keeping in touch with close friends. Reminiscent of another (then) alternative National Day song, “Home” by Kit Chan, the song managed to touch the hearts of many when the trio uploaded the video up on Facebook.
In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, Bryan Tan said that he wrote the song with an imagery that all Singaporeans could relate to areas like playgrounds and the heartlands – and unite of all them he did. Here’s to more songs like these when it comes to national songs!
Less than a week to the parade, make sure you know what’s going on during the National Day Parade 2017 – and grab the good spots for firework-watching.
