There are so many ways to have macaroni and cheese – with lobster, truffles, or with wild mushrooms – and these places know how to do it right
Mac and cheese is probably the ultimate comfort food; that is, when juicy burgers, truffle fries, and chicken wings don’t quite tug at our heartstrings. And if you’re having one of those days where only a fine bowl of the cheesy curdy treat can make everything better, well, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we list our top picks for the greatest mac and cheese spots in Singapore that won’t let you down when you’re craving some gooey delight.
Bedrock Bar & Grill
The mac and cheese at the award-winning steakhouse may be listed as a side, but don’t be fooled. The portion’s huge (but hey, we’re not complaining), and is good for at least two persons ($20). Four types of cheeses (including blue cheese!), truffle oil. and the thinner maccheroni pasta are used to make this heavenly rendition.
Bedrock Bar & Grill, #01-05 Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard, 96 Somerset Road, Singapore 238163, p. 6238 0054.
The White Rabbit
Dive (your fork and spoon) into the truffled mac and cheese ($16) at The White Rabbit for a sinful reward to yourself. Its crumbly top gives it that added texture, and so does the addition of slippery mushrooms.
The White Rabbit, 39C Harding Road, Singapore 249541, p. 9721 0536.
28 HongKong Street
Not exactly a traditional mac and cheese creation, but we just had to include 28HKS’ rendition of the classic dish. Their deep-fried truffled mac and cheese balls ($12) come in four and make the perfect bar snack. We insist you order one even if you’re full from dinner; you won’t regret it.
28 HongKong Street, 28 HongKong Street, Singapore 059667, p. 6533 2001.
OverEasy
Our favourite American-style diner takes this mac and cheese business so seriously, they have a little menu section dedicated to the dish. You have three choices: the Good Old-Fashioned Mac and Cheese ($14), the truffled mac and cheese with wild mushrooms ($16), and the Mac and Cheeks ($24) – which comes loaded with braised beef cheeks, gruyere, and parmesan cheese — oh my.
OverEasy, #01-06, 1 Fullerton Road, Singapore 049213, p. 9129 8484.
PARK
Uncomplicated and surprisingly light: That’s how we can best describe PARK’s truffled mac and cheese ($12.80). We totally dig how generous the guys in the kitchen are with the dosage of truffle oil. Who says less is more?
PARK, #01-01, 281 Holland Avenue, Singapore 278996, p. 9721 3815.
Ah Bong’s Italian
Situated in a Tiong Bahru coffee shop, Ah Bong’s Italian is one of those cool hipster hawker stalls serves a quick and satisfying lunchtime treat. The mac and cheese ($6 if you choose to add truffle oil – which we highly recommend) isn’t always on the ever-changing menu, so call ahead to check before popping by.
Ah Bong’s Italian, #01-02, 103 beach Road (Below Marrison Hotel), Singapore 189704. Opens weekdays 12.00pm-2.00pm, 6.00pm-9.00pm, weekends 12.00pm-2.30pm, 6.00pm-9.00pm.
The Marmalade Pantry
We can’t get over how gooey The Marmalade Pantry’s mac and cheese is ($24). Served on a skillet with parmesan and a touch of blue cheese, it’s a great option if you need something comforting on a rainy day (or a sunny day, whatever, any time is mac and cheese time).
The Marmalade Pantry, #03-22 ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, Singapore 238801, p. 6734 2700.
Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse
What makes the mac and cheese ($26) here so special is the addition of lobster. Mmmmm… We also can’t get enough of the topping of Ritz Crackers crumbs.
Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse, 22 Gemmill Lane, Singapore 069257, p. 6221 4468.
The Disgruntled Chef
Black truffles, cheddar cheese sauce, and crayfish make up The Disgruntled Chef’s version of mac and cheese ($29). It’s part of the ‘big plates’ menu, so you might want to share this baby (or not, if you’re uber greedy).
The Disgruntled Chef, 26B Dempsey Road, Singapore 247693, p. 6476 5305.
