Sometimes you just really need to escape the demands of the every day. You want to switch off your phone, ignore your boss and do something that’s entirely centered on you. When you feel like this you need to indulge in a relaxing, luxurious resort holiday in a place that will whisk away all your worries.
One of the most popular ‘get away from it all’ destinations in the Southeast Asian region is the tropical island nation of the Maldives. A series of jewel-like islands dotted in a pretty chain surrounded by glittering pristine ocean and home to some of the best luxury resorts in the world.
The Residence Maldives is located at Falhumaafushi on the Gaafu Alifu Atoll. To add to the romance and the feeling of switching off you get there via a combination of scenic 55 minute flight and a fun 7 minute speedboat joyride. You can even do the whole ‘golden age of travel’ thing and take a seaplane from Velana International Airport.
Once you arrive you can either do nothing but lie on sparkling sandy private beaches, or on the lounger by your over-the-water villa, next to the stunning pool, or slip into the cool lagoon waters off your private deck. If you really want to – you can indulge in all sorts of resort activities from snorkelling around the resort to visiting other islands and going diving.
Or, my preference, you can just sit back and indulge yourself in amazing food, relaxing massages, fabulous cocktails, and more lazing by the pool.
The resort is a mix of luxury amenities and traditional Maldivian architecture which combines to give everything a very beautiful tropical minimalist feel … the entire resort is perfect for Instagram pics.
Here are just a few of the reasons we LOVE The Residence Maldives …
A buggy drives you to your personal pool villa over the crystal clear waters of the ocean, looking down I spotted a stingray swimming by. The villa has its own deck with stunning views of the pool and the ocean beyond. You feel like you’re in a romantic movie as you sit back and sip your champagne in a huge marble and wood-toned living room with your personal plunge pool right outside. It was hard to choose between the enormous fluffy looking bed, the massive stand-alone bathtub or jumping straight into the water … I drank more champagne while I made the decision.
Food, glorious food!
The Residence Maldives is particularly known for its amazing food. For your daily meals – for those of you who can manage leaving your luxurious villa of course – head to The Dining Room for great beachfront dining. This is where you go for long leisurely breakfasts, lunches and dinners. There’s lots of great seafood dishes with interesting twists as well as classic comfort food for breakfasts. But you die-die must not miss out on at least one dinner at The Falhumaa. This is more of a fine dining experience so do dress up at least a little bit (wear your sandals) with a focus on amazingly fresh grilled seafood. You might, however, find yourself distracted from your plate by the fact that whole restaurant is over the water at the end of a 230 metre long jetty! You need to be there at sunset for some of the most Insta-worthy views of the whole resort. If that isn’t enough for you, The Residence Maldives can also organise an entirely private personal dining experience … Just the thing is you’re thinking of popping the question, right?
Unique pampering experience
The Residence Maldives has the only Spa by Clarins in the Maldives so you need to put aside at least one day for total and complete relaxation. Clarins is internationally renowned for its nature-based beauty and skin products and the resort’s therapists have all been trained in using them to not only relax your body and mind but to also deal with any skincare issues you might have. They will ask you about your personal routine and pick the right products to use. There are six separate pavilions at the end of a jetty with the sound of lapping water adding to the whole dream-like experience. Yes, I admit it, I totally fell asleep.
The spa is open until 8pm at night too, which means you can drop by for a bit of sun-exposure recovery if you need it after a day on the beach, but do make sure to book as the slots fill up quickly!
The setting sun
As we mentioned, the sunsets at The Residence Maldives are so stunning just about your entire Instagram feed will be made up of pics of the glorious colours of the setting sun. It’s the colours and the way those colours reflect off the water that makes them so photographic and really memorable. You can even take a Sunset Cruise on a dhoni boat and look out for dolphins along the way. Apparently the sunrises are just as spectacular but to be entirely honest I just never woke up in time to see one … Those beds are so damn comfortable.
Discreet, impeccable service
The entire time I was at The Residence Maldives I didn’t once feel bothered … If I needed someone to help me, they were there. If I just wanted to sleep on the beach, I wasn’t interrupted with offers of drinks or towels. From the welcoming committee at the boat to the lovely housekeeping staff (yes, they can find you toothpaste if you forgot to pack it) and the smiling buggy drivers, the staff truly fit the brief of the Maldives as the ‘smiling islands’. One can only say ‘Shukuriyaa!’ … that’s thank you in Hindi.
If you’re looking for a glorious, indulgent and relaxing holiday experience, you really need to check out The Residence Maldives. While it’s perfect for a private romantic trip, it’s just as welcoming for families or groups of friends who want to hang out and take Instapics all day. Whatever you need to relax, The Residence Maldives can provide.
