A bevy of new local plates has been added to the restaurant's menu of all-time favourites, such as fried carrot cake and chilli crab
There’s a posh version of everything here in Singapore, from international faves like burgers and hot chocolate to local food like laksa and fish head curry. Taking the trend of mod Sin restaurants in the city up a notch, Kopi Tiam at the oh-so-swish Swissôtel The Stamford has given its Singaporean dishes some serious gourmet treatment. Kopi Tiam (a local term for coffee shop) is all about enjoying classic street food in a luxury setting, which makes it a great place to bring visitors, clients and loved ones.
Another reason to (re)visit this old-meets-new restaurant; Kopi Tiam has recently expanded its menu of local favourites, with highlights such as Ayam Panggang, grilled chicken thigh slathered with fresh turmeric and lemongrass, and wok-fried beef with shaoxing wine and soya sauce. We’re also salivating over the new wok-fried roasted pork belly, an indulgent platter of the layered five-spiced meat, served with leek and garlic to impart a riot of flavours with every bite.
For those who aren’t familiar with the menu, the restaurant’s signature is its fish head curry, a flavoursome concoction of spicy curry broth, ladies’ fingers, tomatoes, eggplant and fish head. Prefer something kinder on your tongue? Go for the deep-fried sweet and sour grouper, the fried carrot cake, and bak kut teh (pork rib soup). Other mainstays to try are the nasi goreng istimewa (rice, fried chicken, chicken satay, fried egg, prawn crackers) and the superb crab renditions – black pepper, chilli and salted egg yolk.
What’s more, with SG50 just around the corner, there’ll be a special menu available for the 50 days leading up to Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. From 21 June to 9 August 2015, Kopi Tiam will be serving a selection of local heritage dishes including chicken rice, laksa and braised Hokkien mee, each priced from – wait for it – only 50 cents per tasting portion. That’s insane, in our opinion! Here’s the catch: there are only 50 portions per dish available in a day, so head along to the restaurant nice and early. Take a look at more mouthwatering images of its offerings below.
