A quickie with Singapore fashion entrepreneur and influencer on her minimalist clothing label exhibit
Whether she’s jetting off to Paris for fashion week, being street snapped by legions of photographers or giving us serious Instagram envy, Yoyo Cao (or better known on Instagram as @yoyokulala) has added another feather to her cap with her label Exhibit showing its second collection at the concluded Singapore Fashion Week 2015. We caught up with her just minutes before the runway show.
Hi Yoyo! Tell us what direction Exhibit is taking for the latest collection?
The latest direction is focused on texture rather than colour, as compared to last season. You’ll find this in details like netting, pompoms and mesh.
Are there any key pieces we should look out for?
Definitely! There’s a black tube dress with layered mesh, which is something that can be worn during the day or at night. It’s pretty versatile depending on your hair or makeup.
Would you say that this collection is based off your personal style?
The inspiration for this collection, surprisingly, was a pair of sneakers. So yes, it’s partly inspired by my personal style especially since I’m not a girly-girl and I rarely wear dresses.
Who is the Exhibit woman?
The Exhibit woman is someone confident enough to carry off the most minimal of looks and rock it with the perfect flats or sneakers.
How would you say you’ve grown as a designer?
Last year was our first collection and in terms of fabric and shoes, or cutting and even the design itself, I feel that we’ve definitely grown more mature and we’re creating more wearable pieces. And the fact that I’ve been going to international fashion weeks, I get really inspired by how luxury fashion is done and hopefully, this reflects in my work.
