New watering holes to drink beer, cocktails and wine at Emporium Shokuhin, CHIJMES, Tanjong Pagar and more
So where shall you get your drinking fix this time? From shophouses in Tanjong Pagar that serve craft beers to mammoth-sized gastropubs with live music, and even a wine bar where you can sip away with seafood; these hot new bars in Singapore are blipping temptingly on our booze radar. You’ll thank us for that hangover in the morning… or not.
Freehouse
We’re pleased as punch, ’cos this hot new bar just opened a stone’s throw away from our headquarters at Telok Ayer. Lagers and IPAs are available from tap, lodged into this shophouse’s white tiles that create the illusion that you’re drinking beer that’s brewed within the walls. Bevvies include the likes of New Zealand’s Zeffer Cider and Munich’s Hofbrau Lager, and for the peckish, can you say no to bacon tempura and kimchi bulgogi dogs??
Freehouse, 21A Boon Tat Street, Singapore 069620. Open daily 5pm-12am.
Mo’Mor Izakaya
Unlike traditional Japanese izakayas that boast a low-key, shabby appeal, this one ups the elegance with its prime real estate spot along Tanglin Road. Aside from this key Orchard location – this place also has a wood-floored alfresco veranda surrounded by inviting greenery – Mo’Mor Izakaya also offers drool-worthy tapas (think hamachi collar and grilled iberico pork jowls), and fit-for-a-feast mains like spice rub lamb racks and miso ginger spring chicken. But just because it looks more refined, doesn’t mean you have to hesitate from getting blissfully inebriated – it is an izakaya after all, folks.
Mo’Mor Izakaya, #B1-01 Tanglin Post Office, 56 Tanglin Road, Singapore 247964, p. 6463 8080. Open Sun-Wed 11am-11pm, Thu-Sat 11am-1am.
Mikkeller Singapore
If you think the prospect of making it big by brewing your own beer in your backyard is too far-fetched, just look to the ‘hoppingly’-ambitious visionaries that are Mikkeller. Now a household name since developing the art of DIY beer in Copenhagen in 2005, Mikkeller has reached out with branches all over the world, offering exclusive craft beers within its popular premises. And with the Singapore outlet finally slated to open with 20 taps at Prinsep Street’s DECK – one of our fave independent art spaces around – we expect this to attract masses of artholics and beer connoisseurs alike.
Mikkeller Singapore, 120A Prinsep Street, Singapore 187937. More information tbc.
Umi + Vino
What’s better than pampering your palate with fresh, juicy seafood? Drinking it all down with a glass of white wine…salut! A new establishment that’s part of Marina Square’s Emporium Shokuhin – known for housing a Japanese live seafood market and a beef dry-aging facility – Umi + Vino gives you a double dose of exquisite eats, serving as both a seafood resto and a wine bar for your post-work pleasure. From sashimi to ceviche, you’ll certainly have plenty to pair that Sauvignon Blanc with.
Umi + Vino @ Emporium Shokuhin, #01-18 Marina Square, 6 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039594. Open daily 11.30am-10pm.
Finders Keepers
Instead of being selfish and playing Finders Keepers upon discovering this new waterhole, we’re sharing the love by including it in our boozy round-up. Situated along Craig Road (isn’t the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood simply swell?), this shophouse hideout isn’t just a bar, but also a liquor store where you can stock up on Bailey’s, Glenlivet and Grey Goose for your next no-holds-barred house party. And when you do get thirsty from all that shopping – which you will – Finders Keepers has you covered with on-menu drinks and bar bites.
Finder Keepers, 2 Craig Road, Singapore 089662, p. 6222 2671. Open Mon-Sat 12pm-12am.
N30
Nothing sacred about this raucous dig despite residing within the convent grounds of CHIJMES! Lately buzzing through the scene is news of this fresh-faced nightlife contender; part-bar, part-restaurant, N30 has been enticing all sorts of party animals with its one-for-one drink promos and debaucherous, don’t-tell-your-Mum vibes. When you’ve had your fill in tipples and the buzz is just right, swagger your way to the adjacent an.t.t club for hip-hop and EDM anthems. Looking for a new party pad? This place might just be it.
N30, #B1-01/02/03/04 CHIJMES, 30 Victoria Street, Singapore 187996, p. 6255 5053. Open ’til 6am.
Timbre+
one-north isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when you’re looking for cool digs to knock back pints over gourmet grub, and maybe even take in live music, but that’s all going to change. Timbre’s latest venture, Timbre+, plans to spice up the Westside business district with a positively mammoth new gastropark that’ll feature 35 food and beverage partners. 14 of which are helmed by chef-owners and entrepreneurs, while the rest are traditional mom and pop stalls. And you can even wash all that down with a bucket of beer from Timbre’s self-service bottle shop, featuring rarities and craft brews that will appeal to lovers of boutique beers.
Timbre+, 73A Ayer Rajah Crescent JTC LaunchPad @ one-north Singapore 139957. Open Mon-Thu 6am-12am, Fri-Sat 6am-1am. Closed on Sun.
